Thousands of people across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal are set to benefit from an increase to the fuel allowance payment. 

It's set to rise by 5 euro to 38 euro weekly, as the Fuel Allowance season begins. 

Payments are to start this week for over 465 thousand households across the country, with eligibility expanding this year.

Junior Minister Marian Harkin says is hopeful it'll help households to some degree:
