A week of disruption is expected in class rooms across the North West.

More than 23-thousand members of the Teachers' Union of Ireland are beginning industrial action today - ahead of Wednesday's nationwide public sector strike.

From today, TUI members will refuse to answer work calls or emails outside contracted hours, while secondary teachers will withdraw from 'Croke Park hours' - or 'hours outside their normal timetable'.

TUI General Secretary Michael Gillespie says 98 per cent of members backed industrial action, amid frustration over the Government's failure to negotiate a new pay deal.
