The Government of the day is being blamed for agreements made during Brexit and how the long term impact is now being felt in Killybegs and elsewhere.

2026 has been described as a year of "economic Armageddon" for the sector due to major quota cuts.

Many jobs in the town are now under threat with over 2,000 people are directly or indirectly employed in the sector. 

Speaking during statements on fishing quotas, Fianna Fail Donegal TD Pat the Cope Gallagher says there is still time for the EU to do the right thing:
