A leading farming official in the North West has warned the government to prioritise agriculture over European defence budgets.

The comments from the IFA chairman in Sligo come as Ireland will continue to ramp up its spending on defence, according to the Minister in charge.

Helen McEntee is hosting EU Defence Ministers and the Deputy General Secretary of NATO in Druid's Glen in Wicklow this morning.

The Government has pledged a further 10 million euro to support training centres in Ukraine ahead of the event.

Michael O Dowd, Sligo IFA chairman says the conflict between Russia  and Ukraine will only have one outcome and it's pointless for the Irish government and Europe to be ploughing money into it.
