A local Fine Gael Councillor has said he had a positive experience despite being unsuccessful in securing the party's nomination to contest the upcoming Seanad by-election.

Minister for Housing and Local Government James Browne is expected to confirm a bye-election for the remaining vacancy in the Oireachtas later.

The vancy arose after Fine Gael's Sean Kyne returned to the Dáil after winning the Galway West bye-election in May.

Fine Gael has selected Dublin city councillor and former lord mayor Ray McAdam to run.

Sligo Councillor Thomas Walsh says he hopes to contest General elections in the future.
