It's emerged a significant site which would expand ATU Sligo and provide much needed student accommodation wasn't purchased.

In February 2025, ATU Sligo was given the green light to purchase the 16 acre site near the campus at Ballinode. 

It was after Sligo County Councillors voted to sell the land to the ATU in November 2024. 

However, the sale never happened. 

Discussions are now said to be ongoing between Sligo County Council and a private developer to see if the site can be developed in order to provide student accommodation. 

Speaking in the Dail, Fianna Fail TD Eamon Scanlon says frustration is growing locally.

Responding, Junior Minister Marian Harkin believes the discussions taking place is the now the best way forward:
