Dentists working in the HSE have voted to take industrial action for the first time ever.

The Irish Dental Association says the vote is in response to planned restructuring within the HSE, following what it calls "the disastrous restructuring of dental services in 2004 and 2011".

It’s the latest blow for the HSE that has already this week had to cope with Hospital workers engaging in industrial action in the form of a work-to-rule.

In June of this year Deputy Pearse Doherty claimed in the Dáil that the current dental care treatment model was in crisis and that system is designed to force people to seek private dental care with an ongoing withdrawal of Demists from the medical card dental scheme

IDA CEO, Fintan Hourihan explains why the dentists balloted to take action.
