A Leitrim Councillor has warned motorists to be vigilant on the region's roads over the next number of day as schools reopen after the summer break.

The Cathaoirleach of the Manorhamilton MD, Cllr Eddie Mitchell has urged drivers to expect the unexpected around school, as well as bus collection points.

31 children under 16 have died or been seriously injured on North West roads over the last 5 years.

The data has been published by the Road Satety Authority which show there were 23 in Donegal, 5 in Sligo and 3 in Leitrim.

The national figure stands at 658.
