Sligo University Hospital was the fifth-highest hospital in the country for the number of patients on trolleys during October.

The INMO has stated that last month was the worst October on record for hospital overcrowding, with 12,672 patients being treated in corridors, on chairs or in other inappropriate locations in acute hospitals.

More than 111,000 patients have been treated on trolleys so far in 2026.

In October alone, 951 of those patients were at Sligo University Hospital, while 701 were at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Leitrim Councillor and Regional Health member Paddy Farrell visited the Emergency Department at Sligo University Hospital last week and says staff are stretched to breaking point.
