A Leitrim County councillor has said that the complex nature of accessing — and, for many, understanding — the results of water tests carried out on Lough Melvin could be putting lives at risk.

 

Kinlough-based councillor Justin Warnock raised his concerns at the monthly meeting of the Manorhamilton Municipal District of Leitrim County Council yesterday.

 

The meeting heard that while a significant amount of data on Lough Melvin is available on the EPA website, much of it consists of complex aquatic information that can be difficult to analyse and interpret.

 

Cllr Warnock said that amid concerns about cancer-causing chemicals finding their way into what is a main source of drinking water for many people, there should be a simpler process to allow the general public to access the results of pesticide testing.
