Irish Rail has officially confirmed a lease arrangement for the Sligo Greenway.

The proposed greenway between Bellaghy and Collooney has faced numerous setbacks, after being first mooted back in 2014.

In December 2024, Irish Rail said it couldn't support the project along the disused rail line.

Last December, Sligo Co Co shelved the project after spending approximately €1 million, but said it was willing to resume, if the decision was reversed.

Now Irish Rail has rowed back on that decision, allowing the project to proceed and agreeing to licence the lands needed for the planned greenway but the possibility of the route returned to rail services also remains live.

Independent Cllr Marie Casserly says its important work begins as soon as possible:
