Disappointment has been expressed that the measures do little in tackling the soaring cost of home heating oil.

The price of home heating oil across Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and beyond has doubled.

From midnight, excise duty on petrol will fall 15 cent a litre, with a 20 cent a litre reduction in diesel until the end of May.

The fuel allowance season has been extended by four weeks for the 470 thousand people in receipt of that payment.

Donegal Sinn Fein TD Padraig MacLochlainn says the reduction in the NORA levy doesn't go far enough:
