Four Sligo Councillors have tabled an emergency motion to prevent the creation of a greenway on the Western railway between Collooney and Bellaghy.

It’s thought that should this move proceed, the chances of the track ever being used for rail use would greatly diminish.

The motion was proposed and discussed at this morning’s meeting of the Sligo Strandhill Municipal District of Sligo Council.

Councillors Ann Higgins, Gino O'Boyle, Declan Bree and Arthur Gibbons all voiced serious concern regarding the recently announced plans to establish a greenway on the former rail track.

Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Kilgannon also supported the motion while Fine Gael Councillor Fergal Nealon abstained.
