A Sligo Councillor is backing plans to increase the tax breaks being afforded to homeowners who rent out rooms third level students.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Seamus Kilgannon says similar allowances should be made to those who rent rooms to those taking apprenticeships through colleges such as the ATU.

Recent reports are suggesting that those who rent out more than one room be able to avail of a higher threshold, which could be up to €20,000.

Data from Revenue shows that the 2024 relief cost €47.3m to the Exchequer in forgone revenue, up from €42.5m in 2023, with over 16,500 claimants.

Cllr Kilgannon says in order for apprenticeships to be successful accommodation must be available within a 15 mile radius of the college.
