There are calls for Sligo Abbey to be open all year round.

It’s thought the abbey is the most visited attraction in the County, with visitor numbers trebling over the past decade to reach 46,000 in 2025.

The OPW is to be asked to extend contract of existing staff by 2.5 months which in turn would go towards achieving a more balanced regional spread of tourism.

Labour Cllr Anne Higgins believes the move will pave the way for delivering a premier year round tourist attraction:
