More than 14,700 new patients attended the Emergency Department at Sligo University Hospital between January and April this year, with average waiting times for admission ranging from 13 to 17 hours.

Figures presented to Councillor Felim Gurn at the recent Regional Health Forum West and North West meeting show 1,404 patients on trolleys at 8am between January and April, and 44 planned surgeries were cancelled due to bed pressures.

The HSE says increased admissions, viral outbreaks and difficulties accessing long-term care and rehabilitation beds have all contributed to ongoing pressures at the hospital.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Councillor Felim Gurn, a member of the Regional Health Forum, says A&E is struggling to cope with demand and is calling for more Minor Injuries Units to be rolled out across the North West.
