The Dáil has heard calls for a practical intervention to address what is being described as an exceptional staffing pressures at St Patrick's National School in Calry, County Sligo
With 45 applications for Junior Infants and only 28 places available, families face uncertainty ahead of the new school year.
Capacity for the extra students is available at the school but no moves have taken place in relation to an extra teacher being allocated to the Sligo school.
The issue was raised by Deputy Eamon Scanlon with Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Robert Troy who represented the Minster for Education Hildegard Naughton during the Dáil exchange.
Deputy Scanlon says with an unpresented interest in enrolments for next year's Junior infant's class and that the children need an additional teacher in September to cater for a greater enrolment in the future
In response Minister Troy says teaching allocations are based on 2024 enrolment figures and that the schools staffing appeal was unsuccessful
