A Sligo Councillor says latest figures in relation to the number of learner drivers not showing up take the driving test provides ample evidence that an overhaul of the legalisation governing driving laws need to be changed.

 

 

Recent figures suggest that just over 300 learner drivers failed to show up for tests in the North West alone last year.

 

 

The figures of no shows at the centres in Sligo and Carrick-on-Shannon were 122 and 81 respectively.

 

The combined number for the Donegal centres in Donegal, Letterkenny and Buncranna was 198.

 

When it came to the period of time before candidates could sit the test it ranged from 10 to 13 weeks locally.   

 

The waiting time to secure a test at Sligo and Donegal Centre is 10 weeks while in Carrick-on-Shannon it’s 13 weeks.

 

Reacting to the latest findings, Sligo Fine Gael Councillor Dara Mulvey says many young people that urgently need a driving licence are being deprived of an opportunity to sit the test by some who are abusing the system.
