The President of the Sligo Bar Association is calling on the Justice Minister to take new figures from the court service seriously.

 

The data shows a dramatic reduction in the number of criminal legal aid certificates being granted by the Sligo District Court office following the introduction of the new Criminal Legal Aid Scheme in July.

 

In Sligo, the number of certificates granted fell from 107 in July last year to 1 in July 2026.

 

Caroline McLaughlin, President of the Sligo Bar Association says the Minister needs to consider the appointment of an independent mediator to help resolve the impasse:
