There have been over a thousand incidents of aggression, challenging behaviour and violence in North West hospitals, a new report has found.

Multiple records released to The Journal Investigates capture data from HSE and voluntary hospitals around the country for the years 2023 to 2025, inclusive.

Sligo University Hospital has seen 295 incidents impacting staff and 259 affecting service users.

In Letterkenny University Hospital, there has been a growing number of incidents impacting staff and a similar number of incidents affecting service users with 714 in total over the same period.

An average of 18 incidents of aggression, violence or challenging behaviour a day have been recorded in the Irish hospitals system in the past three years, amid warnings that overcrowding and delays for treatment are a contributory factor.
