The north west is set for a heatwave this week, as a large area of high pressure brings very warm air towards Ireland.

In Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim, temperatures are expected to reach 22°C to 26°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday looks set to be the hottest day, with highs of 28°C to 29°C possible in the north west, along with a chance of thunderstorms later.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Met Éireann forecaster Gerry Murphy says people in the North West should take care in the sun, stay hydrated, and be mindful of warm conditions, especially around water and for vulnerable groups.
