A Leitrim Councillor and ICSA member has warned that the falling number of cattle being sold in the regions marts could put their future at risk.

 

Recent analysis by the Farmers Journal suggest that the number of cattle being sold at Marts in Connacht has fallen by 13% between January and May this year and the drop off in Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan is believed to be 8 %.

 

Local marts in Ballymote, Drumshanbo, Donegal, Dowa and Manorhamilton are all seen as vital economic drivers in the local economy.

 

Leitrim farmer Brendan Barry says reductions to the suckler herd will hit many rural communities.
