It's hoped that new legislation aimed at reducing power outages caused by fallen trees will be introduced shortly
The Forestry (Critical Infrastructure) Amendment Bill 2026 proposes wider buffer zones between forestry plantations and key infrastructure including power lines, water mains and gas lines.
The Bill follows widespread disruption caused by Storm Éowyn, when fallen trees blocked access to damaged electricity networks and delayed repairs.
Sligo-Leitrim TD Martin Kenny said the legislation which was recently discussed at firs stage level would help protect critical infrastructure and prevent future prolonged outages.
