A  Leitrim Councillor says that a new report which has recommended a shake up to local government across the country provides plenty of food for thought.

 

The report of the Local Democracy Taskforce has recommend setting up in the region of 100 Municipal Councils across the country over a decade after town councils were abolished.

 

Each MD will have enhanced budgetary and decision-making powers and unlike the former town councils, they will represent all residents within their area, including rural hinterlands, ensuring equality of representation.

 

Fine Gael Councillor Enda McGloin says the report makes a number of interesting proposals and would allow the news Municipal Districts to generate their own revenues streams
