Efforts are continuing to have the shingles vaccine included in the National Immunisation Programme and made available free of charge to people over 65.
The HSE is currently in negotiations with vaccine manufacturers after a 2024 assessment found the vaccine was not cost-effective at its existing price.
Speaking to Ocean FM News, Cllr Marie Casserly, and member of the Regional Health Forum, says she has asked to be kept updated on the discussions and is hopeful a more affordable option can be found.
She says the vaccine offers significant health benefits for older people and hopes progress can be made before next winter.
