Ballymote Community Park has marked a major milestone with the official sod-turning for a new 400-metre athletics track and soccer pitch development.

Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, Charlie McConalogue, attended the ceremony and officially turned the sod for the community-led project.

The project, supported by the 2023 Regional Sports Capital Grant, aims to create an inclusive multi-sport facility serving Ballymote, South Sligo and the wider North-West.

Work is now underway on the first phase, with the athletics track and grass pitch expected to reach a significant stage of completion by the end of the summer.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Ballymote Community Park Group Chairperson Michael Sweeney said the new facilities will encourage people of all ages and abilities to take part in sport for years to come.

Deputy Eamon Scanlon praised the dedication of the Ballymote Community Park committee, saying their fundraising efforts at home and abroad had been instrumental in securing the project's future and moving the long-awaited development forward.
