Following a number of calls from listeners, Ocean FM has been examining the issue of hedge cutting and overgrown roadside vegetation as part of its recent Road Safety Focus messages.

We have established that landowners are generally responsible for maintaining hedges along public roads and that financial assistance is available to help with hedge cutting.

However, there are restrictions on when hedge cutting can take place. To protect nesting birds and other wildlife, the general hedge-cutting period is restricted between 1 March and 31 August each year.

During this period, it is generally illegal to:

Cut hedges.

Dig out or grub up hedges.

Burn hedges.

Otherwise destroy hedgerows.

There are some exceptions to these restrictions, including circumstances where cutting or removing vegetation is necessary to deal with a hazard on a public road.

Leitrim Councillor Pádraig Fallon says road safety must remain a priority and is encouraging landowners to make use of the financial assistance available for hedge cutting.
