The issue of overgrown roadside hedges and overhanging trees is becoming an increasing concern in Leitrim, with local councillor Pádraig Fallon calling on the Local Authority to purchase hedge-cutting equipment.

Speaking on Ocean FM's Road Safety Focus with John Lynch, Councillor Fallon highlighted how roadside hedges in many areas appear to be considerably more overgrown this year than in previous years.

The issue is not confined to Leitrim, with concerns also being raised at other local authority meetings, where landowners are being urged to cut back trees and branches overhanging public roads.

Overhanging branches can pose a particular danger during stormy weather and can also cause damage to passing vehicles.

Councillor Fallon, who represents Sinn Féin, says the problem of overgrown roadside hedges is evident across the country and believes local authorities need to take action to address the issue.

The discussion formed part of Ocean FM's latest Road Safety Focus programme.

A reminder to all motorists: Reduce your speed, particularly on roads where roadside vegetation and overhanging hedges may restrict visibility. Take extra care and be aware of potential hazards.
