Road Safety Message #16

Autumn really is worth admiring.  It can be a spectacular season, but it can also bring challenging driving conditions.

As autumn settles across Sligo, North Leitrim and South Donegal, the changing colours bring some beautiful scenery — but falling leaves can also create an additional hazard for motorists.

Across the region, from the wooded roads around Sligo and North Leitrim to the rural routes of South Donegal, motorists will increasingly encounter roads covered in fallen leaves.

And when those leaves become wet, they can make the road surface much more slippery.

The Road Safety Authority warns that leaves can reduce the grip between your tyres and the road and contribute to skidding. They can also hide hazards underneath, including road markings, potholes and other debris.

Road Safety Message #18

Drivers across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal are being urged to take extra care on the roads over the coming weeks, as deer enter their annual rutting season.

At this time of year, through October and into November, deer become much more active. During the rut, male deer are competing for females and can behave unpredictably, moving quickly between woodland, fields and roads.

That can create a serious hazard for motorists, particularly on rural roads and in areas where deer populations are known to be present, and there are many such areas in the North West
