Children at the local school in Ballinacarrow have been taking a closer look at traffic speeds through the village — and the results have shocked them.

Using a speed gun, the schoolchildren recorded the speeds of vehicles travelling through Ballinacarrow, gathering data that is now being used to support the school’s efforts to have traffic-calming measures introduced.

Ballinacarrow is a busy village on the N17, with traffic particularly heavy during the morning and evening school-run periods, when children are being dropped off and collected.

The pupils’ work has highlighted their concerns about road safety and the speed at which some vehicles are travelling through the village.

The information gathered by the children is now being put forward as evidence in the school’s campaign for measures that could help slow traffic and make the area safer for pupils, parents and other pedestrians.

The project has also given the children an opportunity to play an active role in raising awareness of an issue that affects their community every day.

Learner drivers are being reminded to make sure that they drive under the guidance of a fully qualified, experienced driver for three to four hours between their mandatory lessons with a driving instructor.

Driving instructor Berni Mulvihill Farrell explains that although learner drivers can pick up some bad habits from, say, family members who are helping them, it is vital that they get practice and build confidence between lessons with their instructor.
