Oh my god, you have.
To do it.
You live for fashion.
Hello, and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Lee Campbell, and every week I chat to an expert who helps us to work out how to get more out of the clothes we already own and tells us exactly what is and what isn't worth adding to our wardrobe. I love deep diving into what people are wearing in different fashion capitals. Now, you might remember my trip to Paris last year. I was so excited to share my insights on Parisian women and what they were wearing with fashion journalist Jacqueline Felgate and that was a little crystal ball into what we were wearing in winter. Now, I've just returned from Love, so I thought i'd give you a sneak peek into what our summer fashion will look like in six months or so. There are some interesting colors patterns and a trend that's sticking around for another season. To help me share my observations, I've invited back my style friend and co founder of Mama, Maya Miya Friedman, my fashion friend Maya. Hello, Hello, thank you for joining me again. Now, look, you're going to take over this episode, like to take officially. But first, all returning guests answer a series of questions. So is who is your biggest fashion influence? Usually it's a celebrity that someone says, I am a sponge and a sheep.
I will just absorb it's different people at different times. Yes, So I don't think I have my own style. I will just be very deeply influenced by someone will dive deeper, look at all their Instagram videos. I spend a lot of time now looking when I exercise in the morning. I used to watch the news and the breakfast TV and stuff, and now I just look at fashion videos and I find it very soothing.
So it's less about that person going Oh. For me, it was Rosy Huntington Whitely because I just love her style. I know she's classic but a bit edgy, but I don't seek her out and go I better check what she's been wearing lately. I just I like that you go into the fashion, you're not looking at the head, You're not really noticing the person.
No, no, no, I'm very porous. So for example, you, I'll just dress how you're dressing. Like you and I have started to dress we quite very similar. At other times I've dressed like other friends or other people I work with. When you work, because I'm in the office every day with a lot of young people, I find that my esthetic is very influenced by jen Z and the younger millennials. Yeah, so I find that, Yeah, my eye adjusts to those things quickly.
So it's just the everyday subconscious that comes into you and just a style slat. I'm a mead adoptor. I'm not a late adopter, but I'm definitely not a first adopt A few times yeah, oh okay, now listen, you're going to take over. Because I recently got back from London. I was there for a beauty thing, but of course I did my due diligence. I went a day and a half early, and I have just given you a list. I've just sent it to you, but I haven't told you anymore. Nine trends I observed. So it's basically a crystal ball of what we're all going to be wearing.
You were there for long, and I like how fast you work. So I want to start with a trend that I hate, okay, which is pastors. It's pretty much in order of what I noticed. I took photos, I took notes. Pastors were in every single store. And when I say pastors, it's the frostiest, lightest version of a pastor. So a frosty, frosty ice blue, an almost cream buttery yellow, the softest baby pink. Right, So you know what I'm going to say about that is that they're all the colors I can't wear after I've had my colors done because I'm an autumn correct.
So this podcast isn't just for you, thankfully selfish. Some people like pastors, okay, and so I think you know, pastors are a bit of a classic. If you like them, I'm sure you've still got a lot of them in your wardrobe. What colors do you wear pastals with? Because you can't wear them with black, No, I would wear it with white or denim. And so you know, this is summer, it's very light, it's very bright. A lot of the pastors were in a satin or a silk, which I'll get to a little bit later. So it's not so much that it has to be a linen or it has to be any type of fabric, but a lot of them with that sort of silky fluidy fabric. Can you ever wear a pastor with a bold color? Absolutely? Like what would be an example of, like a pastoral blue? What could you wear it with a bald green or a navy? I love a pastel pink with a red, and I think that that's how you could do it. You're staunchly autumn, you could always wear an autumn on top and a pastel on the bottom. When we do the out Loud live shows, I wore a red velvet suit with a pale blue shirt underneath Gwyneth Paltrow Gucci style, Yes, and that was really surprising and I like that, And I think that's these things with trends. You'll see visual merchandising and it'll be head to toe, one trend, one color, But we don't really walk around like wear visual merchandise. So you can pick a pastal item that you own or love or want to buy and work that back into your wardrobe with your blue denim, your cream dinner, you white denim, so hey, wow, pastors everywhere pastors. The second trend that you noticed that we'll be wearing in summer ethnically inspired and batique prints. Yes. So it's funny because everything nineties and early two thousands has been cool, and I remember about twenty years ago when ethnically inspired prints and batitque prints were everywhere, and they're back. It's very resort. It's very sort of bold contrasts, browns, forest greens, oranges, mustards, white based, black, bass, all different types of prints, but loud, full sets, linen pants, linen maxi skirts, shirts, short shirts everywhere, maxi dresses. I mean lockdown was quite a while ago. Now many people might have been saving since then to go on holidays. You know, there's a cost of living crisis, but as our research at Mamma Mea shows, people will safe save at home to then go on a holiday. So it's very resort out there, very vibrant, and I think also coming off the back or we're in the middle of it of a very sort of monochrome, deep rich winter. It's almost the exact opposite it's bright and bold and shouty.
The colors you mentioned were quite earthy tones, which I'm excited about it. Yes, But is it also bold colors? Like is it that Gorman vibe? Because I've gone off.
That Gorman vibe to me is a bit more acid this was. There's definitely the bright version. Look, you can get any version you want, and there's more subtle versions of a beautiful tan print on a white It's just big, bold prints. When I say bold, the shapes.
Can be tricky when you're older wearing a lot of prints. I don't see you wearing a lot of Prince.
I don't wear a lot of prints. I get scared of prints. Also, I feel like they shout at me a lot when I look in the stores, and maybe this is my adhd. I'm not drawn to that. And so that's the thing. These are the trends I observed. Will I do them all? Probably not? Okay?
Ah, Now the third thing you noticed is Leopard. Yes, I'm so interested in this because I've found myself so consciously gravitating back to Leopard after moving away from it because of Carol Baskin and Tiger King.
Oh great, Well, I didn't think of that look. Leopard and some classy forms of animal print will always be a neutral. But right now in Australia we're seeing leopard hit the stores and it's everywhere for summer that we're heading into. So a lot of leopard jeans and you'll be pleased to hear most of them are straight leg or wide legs. So that's still around because I think a skinny leg leopard says something. It's a combination of two trends. But a lot of leopard, a lot of Leopard shirts, and again it can be a muted leopard or a small leopard print. It's not that sort of big bold children's toy leopard the Harold Baskin correct. And so I bought a pair of affordable leopard jeans when I was there, and they're kind of like a car key and a gray yes.
So you can have like a cold leopard yes and almost like a white and gray muted.
It's not always like a black contrasted with you know, really used bright yellow exactly. So I think that's got a lot of Leopard shoes, Leopard bras. If you want to just do a cute little leopard bras white shirt.
I just bought a pair of Leopard kitten heel slingbacks from Zara.
There you go. So it's not a Leopard uniform by any means. Of course, you don't have to do any of it. But I kind of like it because I in default mode throw on jeans and a T shirt. So now I can throw on my Leopard jeans and a white tea and it's just a bit of something. But I haven't had to put in a much brain power if I don't have it. Can you wear Leopard with a print? Oh? I mean you can. I personally wouldn't. I find it too hard. You could do it with like a great striped shirt, even if it's not too contrast. You could do contrasty. But I like a real subtle stripe, so maybe like a white and a beige you could do it.
I find that Leopard can work with Camo, but they have to have something in common to the two print.
It needs to look purposeful. The fourth trench, you noticed very short skirts and shorts, very very so speak to me. I know. For again, we don't have to do it. So the Runway about a season ago had incredibly short shorts. We're talking. They're kind of a bit balloony but deep. Yeah, undies.
We're now at the stage where some of us were undies bigger than the shorts of other people.
That's so true. And they're not tight tight, they kind of sit out a little bit, but they cut up right up figh. So of course we saw that in all the runways, so now it's everywhere. In Zara, it was everywhere in Mango, they were everywhere. Did you see them on actual people? I did, but they were probably of a certain demographic. I'm not look is that a very skinny, very young demographic. Yeah. Yeah. However, when I got into my forties, I started wearing mini dresses and miniskirts and I've never worn them before. My legs are not in better condition. I just give less f's. I'm not going to do short, short, short, but keep in mind global Warming. It is incredibly hot here in Australia, so something short is quite nice. What I've done I bought a secondhand Zara skirt that's quite short. It's like a mustardy military kind of skirt. And then I bought a long men's white business shirt and you wear the skirt with the business shirt hanging out at the bottom. It's very cool. Oh, you wear the skirt over the shirt exactly, so I observed it everywhere. And of course the hybrid is the skirt dish. You're doing great sports. I've got a couple of skorts from dish. Yep. Zara's brought the scort back, and I literally last year got rid of my Zara scorts from fifteen years ago. When will I learn?
I know, I would recommend the scot if you're wanting to go for a shorter skirt, it still looks like a skirt, yes, but it is a short so if you've got kids, for example, if you're getting in and out of cars, you're in a situation where you really don't want the world to be a gynecologist.
Yes, a scort just gives you a little bit more comfort. Totally agree. And also I like this trend also for spring before it gets too hot, because I'm more comfortable wearing shorts or a skirt with a more covered up top, you know, a long shirt rather than the tank or sneakers and a lightweight trench. I'm not really gonna wear skirts shorts with also a singularly top. It just feels too much for me. That's my personal vibe. So I like this trend seasonally.
The fifth trendy noticed for summer Boho vibes, fringing and details. Yes, that seems like a word salad.
That is a word salad, so it's kind of everything goes. There's a lot of long boho Maxi dresses, fringing. Siena Milla just came out while I was there with her collaboration with Marx and Spencer. Sienna's having a comeback. She went to the Chloe Show. She was the original Chloe boho girl, and then Boho kind of disappeared for ten fifteen years, and that's, you know, sort of that bohemian vibe and it is back. Floey linen dresses, floey linen skirts, not much shape, very easy to wear, Gladiator sandals, gladiator sandals, that's it. Heaps of fringing on bags. All bags are kind of macrame kind of vibes with lots of fringing and beating. So I never really got into this the first time. It's not particularly me. I soak a few fringed kind of bags and beaded bags that I thought was quite cool. But again, I think it's easy to wear if this is your style.
The Australian labels Spell was really known and became very very famous for its boho vibe yes, and it was really.
At the top of that tree. Even internationally.
It got a lot of attention, probably about ten years ago, maybe more so Trent number six for summer brights and whites.
Yeah, so look, I didn't see anything black, I didn't see anything muted. So it was pastels, prints, brightes and whites. Everything made a statement in a different way. A lot of hot pink, a lot of really bright lime green aquas. When I think of those, I normally think linen. I don't know why, because it just feels holiday, it feels resort. And there was some linen, but it was more sophisticated. There was a lot of suiting in brightes, a lot of tailored pan matching, suiting matching. But I feel like, again, for me, i'd probably do the bottoms and something more neutral on top, So you wouldn't do like a fuchire suit or a lime green suit. I've fallen into that trap before and I've worn it once and then I'm like, WHOA, that was such a statement, So maybe I would. But potentially if I'd wear them separately. And then the whites I saw everywhere again, not so much linen, A lot of satin whites, A lot of poplin. Poplin is back and that's that just very classic, almost like pillowcase cotton. A lot of poplin. Kylie Jenner just brought out her summer range which is all poplin cotton. So is it like thinner than when you think of cotton, Well, it doesn't really have that stretch. It's like what your traditional cotton sheets are made out of. Lots of dresses. It creases, It's not the easiest to wear, to be honest, and it's quite a basic fabric. But a lot of poplin, white cotton everywhere, which was interesting. There was linen, of course, there will always be linen. When you said white satin, I mean, what are you wearing white satin? You want to look for lines, not a bias cut skirt, Yes, you do. You want to get it cut on the bias. Unfortunately a lot of the fast fashion and affordable brands aren't cutting on the bias because that takes up twice the amount of fabric because they have to cut it on the diagonal and they waste the fabric around it, so they'll cut it not on the bias, but on the bias falls that beautiful flowy if it just sits awkwardly.
Maybe I'm buying things that are too cheap because I find that it clings around the hips and thighs.
And the silk needs to be made well, it needs to be lined, and you generally need to size up. So anything satin or silk, a slip dress or a slip skirt, I always size up because I just don't want that. That's where I've been going wrong.
And I also realized you don't want to zip up the side because that then puckers.
And also if you're sizing up, you want an elastic waist so you've got a bit of room. So I recently bought a cream atmosson Here MAXI satin skirt and it's got a beautiful thick elastic waist so it doesn't give you that sort of double bubble, and it's fully lined. I hate white items that aren't lined or the lining stops at the mini. But it's a long skirt and you can see it, yeah, well you can see the pocket. So anything white I generally will try on instores or purchase, install and just be careful of a flash period. You don't you don't want to get your period unexpectedly wearing white number seven trend Saturn. Yeah, I touched on Saturn and this is what I'm talking about. Slip so last summer here in Australia also coming into me, we've seen a lot of satin satin pants, hyper feminine slip dresses, and that's been in sort of your navies, your blacks, your emeralds. But again, like the colors I said before, a lot of the softer prints, like the ethnically inspired softer prints, are in Saturn. And then your block colors or your pastors.
When I think of Saturn, I think of something that looks really cheap. Yeah, have I just got the wrong You've got the thing in your head. Very few affordable items are silk. But it looks like silk, it feels like silk. It doesn't have to be shinier than silk.
Depends on the quality. So that's the thing. If you're seeing something it looks really cheap, it's probably quite a crappy Saturn. But you can get beautiful quality Saturns that are bit sort of velvety or even kind of have that beautiful kind of texture that almost makes them feel like a kashmere. But most of them are very lightweight. Again because of the heat. You don't have to do the saturin. But I just think it's easy.
I've been noticing and finding myself craving that esthetic of the saturn skirt.
Yes, and then you check on a tee and a sneaker, and it's all a bit unexpected. I think people go, oh with satin skirts so feminine. I have to put on a feminine top and a balant. Yeah, but do the opposite Cross program, yes, Cross program. Oh, I'm excited about this. Number eight. Red still rains red, still everywhere. I'm so stoked because I've got a few red pieces now and I felt panicked that I had to wear them. It's not the deep red wine. It's quite a bright, true red. Yeah. I've got a pair of shoes that once I saw this, you know, saw it still everywhere, mostly in accessories, some slip dresses and slip skirts, believe it or not, but then still mostly in accessories, shoes and bags. So there's still a lot of pops of red. So if you haven't done the red thing yet and you want to, but you think, oh, it's going to be out in a hot minute. Everyone's still doing red.
I've got some red kitten heels, which I love, and I've also so got some red flats which you got me onto the Garny one.
Yeah, daisy, they eighty bucks a daisy. Comfortable.
They're really comfortable. They're sort of patent red. Yes, they lift and outfit. So I find reds with neutrals, reds with carca, reds with beige, all those kinds of.
Colors again, because my default when I'm in a rush is jeans and a T shirt. You chuck on those red shoes and you're like, oh, I made an effort when you really didn't.
Red shoes, jeans and a blazer of any color, Yes, brilliant.
Love it. The final trend that we're going to be getting into is toe sandals. What do you mean? I'm so sad about this. I tried to ignore it, but then when I got home, I saw that one of the US publications had written that they're officially back. So I mean that it has a separate little strap for your toe, so you know how it's got the toe and then the strap goes over the other flour. Oftentimes they have a little embellishment on top, like a little gold ball ball or whatever, a bit gladiator. I can't do this because I struggle enough with my feet. I find them really uncomfortable. I find when you wore and you get sweaty, it just gives more surface area for irritation. But toe sandals were everywhere, so that's separate little thing. Toe. Gosh, you've got to have nice looking feet, agreed, and I think you can't really walk. I mean some are comfortable, but in general they're hard to get comfortable. I've got some.
I don't find that they're too comfortable, depends what the other straps are doing. But I find them a bit like thumb rings.
Yes, it feels a bit like why are we highlighting this exactly necessary but not beautiful part of our body.
It would be like an elbow strap, like you know, we know it's there, everyone needs them, but like.
Let's not do attention to them. With the other toe I think we'll skip those.
Okay, great, it's very expensive.
How old are I want to finish by asking you about Fuji and budget? Yes, J want to know what I bought it I didn't buy a lot, so anyone planning to travel soon, the dollar is horrifically bad London. It's already in a very expensive place. I bought four or five things, so I'm going to tell you about them. First. My two budgets, so Primark, that's their kmart. It is so overwhelming but so fun. But I bought something that I'm pleased to report is still cool as well. The Mary Jane or the ballet flat. So they were still everywhere, but they were cream or white or tags. I've got a few of those, you do. I bought a light denim pair. They're about twelve pounds, so twenty five bucks. They are the most comfortable ballet flat. Unfortunately, I don't think you can shop Primarke online, but if you're heading over or your sister lives there, they're so comfortable. They're just a little Mary Jane and a light denim.
I'm chuffed that you're still buying Mary Jane's. You know how, there are sometimes at the trend where you go, oh, well, there's no point now because it's over, but in actual fact it's not over.
And I think for me, I mean it depends where you live. They're not really that warm for winter, but it's a ate transseasonal shoe or a closed in shoe for summer. These are very lightweight, so I think we'll see that trend continue, but in light of visual colors. Then I went to French Connection. Remember French Connection, I do. They changed to Unison in Australia. A few years they changed their name. They changed their name, they changed their designs FC UK it was FC UK and then French Connection. There's still a thing in the UK. You can shop online. I bought a chunky mixed metal necklace, half gold, half silver. It's down to sixteen euro at the time of recording. I think you can shop online. I loved their accessories always really yeah, love love. What are you going to wear with them? With I think I had a pair of shoes from there once. Everything because it's half silver, half gold, I don't have to think, you don't And oftentimes on the way to the office, I will chuck my accessories in my bag and put them on when I'm here, and if I don't have times to think, just chuck everything. Chunky chains are still everywhere, gold or silver or mixed metal. Oh good, So there you budget by my budget. Okay, so Massimo Duty is the fancy Zara, So it's a bit like, how cause is the fancy h and M I wish we had it here we don't, but I kind of also love that because it feels a bit specih. So there's a white skirt that's gone absolutely viral. Masimo Duty wasn't the first brand to do it. It was a very high end designer brand. But it's a Maxi skirt. There's heaps of versions. It's like a soft denim or a poplin or a structured linen. But you're going to see them everywhere in summer. I bought the Masimo Duty pleated denim skirt and it's kind of got a pocket. It's pretty a line Maxi. They're going to be everywhere denim Maxi's.
I've been seeing a lot about these, and people are already starting to wear them now in winter. I find that the stiffness, I can't really walk in there, so.
You need to think of it more like a chambre. And it's not too tight, so these are quite feminine in shape, but then the pleat kind of gives it an not a stiff denim. It's not a stiff nim and it's not a pencil skirt. There's lots of room to move. So a skirt like that you were going to see in every single store. Very soon they were in every store. What do you wear it with? I am going to wear it now with a sneaker and a knitter a cardigan, and then in summer I'm gonna wear it with my sandals and a tea or a blazer. I mean, it's just a plain white bottom and it's so comfortable. So Next is such a fantastic high street store in the UK. They ship here their kids stuff. I buy so much for my son. But Bomber jackets were still everywhere, again in lighter colors, so you creams even linen Bomber jackets, which is so cool with a jean and a tea or a tang. When you wearing a bomber jacket, do you do it up ever or you don't? Interesting you say that it depends on I think what you're wearing it with. I kind of do the two middle buttons so you can still see my necklace. And I thought bomber jackets had zips, Well most of them have press studs this season. Ah okay, so a press study is good. So I bought like a light khaki gray. My tip with the Bombers this season is they're very short because they're made for the young kids. I bought a size fourteen, so the shoulder is very big and long and cool, and I roll the cuff and it's very oversized. So if you are shopping online, I'll size up a few sizes because then you're also going to get the link and it's just a bit more effortless. Mayor we should go to shopping. That was great.
Well, we do have a shopping WhatsApp group we do with our friend Sally Hepworth. But we should also mention that you and I and Sally have started swapping clothes.
We have, you know, we realize that cost of living crisis and circular economies. So if you've got friends that you've got similar sizes or accessories, get swapping.
