Edmund Kemper, known as the “Co-ed Killer,” murdered his grandparents as a teenager before later killing six young women in California, followed by his mother and her friend in 1973. After killing his mother, Kemper confessed to the murders over the phone to police and was arrested, eventually receiving multiple life sentences after a trial in which psychiatrists debated his sanity and responsibility. His case became one of America’s most studied serial-killer stories, particularly because of his intelligence, his manipulation of psychiatric authorities, and the disturbing contrast between his apparently calm demeanour and his crimes.
