STORY 1: South Rome Charged With Knife Attack on Cotton Avenue

Billy Robert Kelly Jr., aged 57, of South Rome, was arrested for felony aggravated assault after attempting to stab someone with a kitchen knife during an altercation. Reports indicate he grabbed a red-bladed knife while drinking with the complainant, fearing the complainant would sic his dog on him. The complainant had repeatedly warned Kelly to stop prior to the incident. As of Tuesday morning, Kelly remained in Floyd County Jail without bond.

STORY 2: Postal Service to Pause Restructuring Mail Processing System

Louis DeJoy, the U.S. Postmaster General, has pledged to halt a postal service restructuring plan until at least January 1, 2025, following concerns raised by senators including Jon Ossoff of Georgia. The plan, which led to significant mail processing delays at the Atlanta Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Palmetto, Georgia, aims to improve the Postal Service's financial sustainability and competitiveness. DeJoy's commitment comes after only 36% of inbound mail at the Palmetto facility was delivered on time. He emphasized the plan's necessity but acknowledged the need to address the issues causing delays before nationwide expansion. Senator Gary Peters, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced DeJoy's commitment to pause the restructuring plan.

STORY 3: Futuristic Electric Flying Vehicles About to Become Reality in Georgia

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), once seen as futuristic, is becoming a reality, with at least 20 states, including Georgia, investing over $8 billion in the technology, expected to grow to $45 billion by 2030. The Federal Aviation Administration is anticipated to certify the first electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) late this year or early 2025. Georgia has seen activity with eVTOLs, including Archer Aviation building a manufacturing plant in Newton County and Bravo Air partnering with Japan's SkyDrive for short trip flights in Augusta. AAM focuses on transporting passengers and cargo on short trips at low altitudes, with eVTOLs capable of carrying four to six passengers up to 250 miles. The Georgia DOT formed a working group to assess AAM's potential, finding that nearly all airports in the state are compatible for eVTOLs. Plans are underway for eVTOL chargers and commercial operations to commence between 2026 and 2030.

STORY 4: Chen named Calhoun High School 2024 PAGE STAR Student

Vicky Chen, a senior at Calhoun High School, has been named the 2024 PAGE STAR Student for her outstanding academic achievements and SAT performance. She selected Mrs. Lori Fisher as her STAR Teacher. With a 4.0 GPA and a top-five class ranking, Vicky excels in extracurricular activities and leadership roles. She will attend Emory University to major in Biology. The Student Teacher Achievement Program (STAR) is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Foundation (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation, honoring students and teachers who demonstrate academic excellence. STORY 5: Public Able to Give Feedback on U.S. 278 Safety Project

The Georgia Department of Transportation is soliciting feedback on a proposed project to redesign the intersection of U.S. 278 and Coot’s Lake Road near Rockmart. The plan, set to begin construction in 2026, would convert both Coot’s Lake Road and Atlanta Highway intersections into right-in-right-out only, with U-turns available down the road for left turns. This change aims to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes at the intersection, which averaged 5.6 crashes annually between 2017 and 2021, including fatalities. Interested individuals can leave comments on the project until May 22 via the provided website. The estimated cost of the project is $2.86 million, with designed U-turn locations to facilitate left turns safely. GDOT emphasizes that such designs decrease serious crashes and may even improve travel times during peak traffic.
