STORY 2: fire

A tragic fire in Fairmount has claimed the lives of two individuals. Gordon County Fire Rescue responded to the scene in the early hours of June 16. The structure involved was a single-wide mobile home that was fully engulfed in flames upon arrival. Firefighters battled the blaze, but the intense heat prevented them from immediately entering the residence for search and rescue. Once conditions improved, they discovered the bodies of Brad and Tasha Poole, a couple in their 40s. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, but it is believed that the victims succumbed to their injuries from the fire. The incident is under investigation by multiple agencies. The estimated property loss is valued at approximately $16,000....read more about this at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 3: wreck

A fatal single-vehicle accident occurred in Chattooga County, Georgia on Saturday. Richard Bevans, a 64-year-old man from Rome, was the driver involved in the crash. The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 27 near Scott Hill Road. Bevans' vehicle veered off the road in a curve, colliding with a culvert. The impact caused the vehicle to become airborne over a driveway, then strike a ditch and overturn onto its left side. Bevans was transported to Atrium Health Floyd but sadly passed away from his injuries.

Story 4:  grant

The U.S. Department of Commerce has granted $12.2 million to Dovetel Communications, also known as SyncGlobal Telecomm, to expand middle mile high-speed internet infrastructure in Northwest Georgia. The funding is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's Internet for All Initiative. Dovetel will use the grant to support its $32 million project to build a 185-mile fiber route passing through eight counties between Chattanooga and Atlanta. The project aims to increase network capacity, lower the cost of internet service, and connect unserved regions to the internet backbone. The grant is part of the $1 billion Middle Mile program, which supports the construction and improvement of middle mile infrastructure. The exact start date of the project was not mentioned in the announcement. …………we’ll be back in a moment.

Additional charges of involuntary manslaughter, regarding a fatal fentanyl overdose, were added for a Garden Lakes man already jailed on drug trafficking and explosives charges Friday.

Anthony Brooks Cain, 38, was arrested at his residence at 106 Tyler St. in Garden Lakes on Thursday afternoon along with 37-year-old Jeffrey Daniel McWorther. The search of Cain's and McWorther's Tyler street residence netted more than a pound of marijuana, 12.5 grams of methamphetamine, 87 grams of fentanyl and prescription medications with a total street value of almost $20,000, according to the Floyd County Police Department. Cain is charged with felony possession of destructive devices with intent to kill or injure, felony trafficking in illegal drugs, felony possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance. He is also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug related objects. STORY 6:  opioid

Northwest Georgia cities and counties have received over $2 million in opioid lawsuit settlement funds. Companies like Johnson & Johnson, AmerisourceBergen, and Walmart are paying a total of over $50 billion in settlements nationwide. The exact amounts allocated to each city or county have been difficult to obtain, but documents obtained by KFF Health News reveal the precise dollar figures. Rome and Floyd County received a combined total of $418,317, while neighboring jurisdictions like Chattooga, Polk, Gordon, Bartow, Walker, Catoosa, and Dade Counties also received allocations. The settlements aim to address the opioid crisis caused by aggressive promotion of painkillers. Payments began in 2022 and will continue until 2038, providing an opportunity to combat the epidemic. KFF Health News is investigating how the funds will be used………we’ll sneak in a break, then Bruce Jenkins talks picky eaters…gotta love those right?   That comes your way next on the northwest Georgia News Podcast
