STORY 1:  Police Identify Body Found in Armuchee Creek

Floyd County officials identified the body found floating in Armuchee Creek on Wednesday as Alfred Franklin Trapp Jr., 64, who was listed as homeless. The body, discovered by a passerby, was face down and had been in the water for several days. Trapp's belongings were found on the creek bank. While foul play is not suspected, the body will be examined by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for autopsy. The recovery was initially challenging due to the difficult terrain.

STORY 3:  Sentencing Set for Man Who Threatened to Kill Rep. Greene

Sean Patrick Cirillo, 34, from Macon, will be sentenced in federal court on November 7 for threatening to kill Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Cirillo pled guilty to transmitting interstate threats after making multiple threatening calls to Greene’s office on November 8, 2023. He claimed he planned to kill Greene and used threatening and racist language during the calls. Living in Macon since April on bond, Cirillo has a background in mathematics and previously worked as a data engineer. His mental health and lack of medication were noted during legal proceedings. Law enforcement responded quickly to the threats, and Cirillo remains out on bond until sentencing.

STORY 4: Portions of NWGA Could Reach Heat Index Values Of 108 Thursday

Northwest Georgia was under a heat advisory on Thursday, with heat indices reaching up to 108 degrees due to high temperatures and humidity. The advisory was in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.Rain over the weekend was expected to slightly lower temperatures, but highs remained in the low 90s. To stay safe, residents were advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors or in the shade, and check on others.

STORY 5:   Fork, Spoon & Plate Seeks Indoor Facility to Serve Homeless

Since 2020, Gregory Greene has run Fork, Spoon & Plate, a nonprofit providing meals to the homeless in West Rome. What started as serving 10 people weekly during COVID has grown to 80-100 weekly, with similar numbers this year. Greene noted an increase in families, many working and living in motels or cars due to housing issues. Each Wednesday, meals are served at 7 p.m. at 2501 Redmond Circle, with around 100-125 to-go meals distributed weekly. Greene’s team, now over 40 strong including his children, helps with food preparation and distribution. He is seeking an indoor facility and welcomes community support through donations or volunteer work.

STORY 6: Mapping Tool Documents Use of Georgia’s Rivers and Streams by Recreational Paddlers

Georgia legislators will soon address the issue of public access to rivers and streams with a new tool from outdoor recreation groups: an online map for documenting river use. This map, created by American Whitewater and supported by the Freedom to Float Coalition, aims to highlight the importance of streams for recreation, which contributed over $1 billion to the state's economy in 2022. The current state law, based on an 1863 definition of "navigable," is outdated and doesn’t reflect modern recreational use. The House Study Committee on Navigable Streams will review this, amid concerns that restricting access could impact businesses and public enjoyment. STORY 7: Woods Clarifies Decision on AP African American Studies Course

Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods has apologized for his handling of the decision not to recommend adding an Advanced Placement African American studies course to the state curriculum. Woods, citing compliance with Georgia’s “divisive concepts” law, concluded that the course's content, particularly its focus on “intersectionality,” violated the law. This legislation prohibits teaching U.S. history in a way that could make students feel guilt or inferiority based on race. Critics argue that excluding the course impedes comprehensive education on U.S. history. Woods stated that while the AP course won’t be state-approved, districts can still offer it independently, and students may take the AP test for college credit. He is seeking legal clarification on the matter.

We’ll have closing comments after this.
