STORY 1: staffing

The Floyd County Sheriff's Office and Floyd County Police Department are experiencing an increase in staffing levels, reaching their highest numbers in recent memory. Sheriff Dave Roberson stated that the Sheriff's Office is fully staffed for the first time in a long time, thanks to the county's efforts to attract and retain officers with competitive pay raises. The Floyd County Prison has also seen an improvement in staffing since the COVID-19 pandemic, with more officers returning due to better compensation. The Floyd County Police Department is close to being fully staffed, and officials credit the county's support, including a pension plan, for attracting and retaining officers. The law enforcement agencies expressed gratitude towards County Manager Jamie McCord for his leadership.....read more about this at northwestgeorgianews.com.…….get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: jurors

Despite the resumption of full operations at the Floyd County judicial center, a significant number of people summoned for jury duty are not showing up, causing difficulties for the courts. Floyd County Superior Court Clerk Barbara Penson reported that only 35% to 40% of jurors are appearing as required. While penalties can be enforced for noncompliance, the county is currently focusing on reminding citizens about the importance of their civic duty and the health precautions taken during jury selection. Concerns about large gatherings may be contributing to the low turnout, but the courts have implemented safety measures. Penson urged individuals to contact the court if they are unable to attend or provide a valid reason for their absence.

STORY 3: tax

The Floyd County Board of Education held its first public hearing to discuss the 2023 millage rate and also addressed updates on athletic facilities at the county's high schools. The school system is seeking to lower the millage rate for 2023, although it will still result in a tax increase. Two more public hearings are scheduled before the millage rate is finalized. Updates on construction projects included the completion of a new road to alleviate traffic and the installation of turf fields and synthetic tracks at two high schools. However, clearance from the Georgia Environment Protection Division is still needed to begin construction on field houses at two other high schools, causing some concern among board members.

STORY 5:  gbi

Governor Brian Kemp has appointed Chris Hosey as the new director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), succeeding Mike Register. Hosey, currently the head of the GBI's Investigative Division, will assume the role on August 1. With over 35 years of experience at the GBI, Hosey brings extensive institutional knowledge and skill to the position, according to Governor Kemp. Hosey's career at the GBI includes roles such as narcotics agent, assistant special agent in charge, inspector, and deputy director of investigations. He holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in public administration, as well as being a graduate of the FBI National Academy. The Georgia men's basketball team, with a roster featuring several new players, is heading to Italy for an excursion that will include exhibition games and team-building activities. Coach Mike White is optimistic about the team's improvement in his second season at the helm. The trip provides an opportunity to build chemistry and assess player performance. Winning is not the primary focus, but rather playing well and getting better. Senior guard Jabri Abdur-Rahim sees the trip as a chance to bond and build camaraderie. This will be the third international tour for the Bulldogs in the past 11 years.
