STORY 1: Floyd County Commissioners Tap The Brakes on Rome Speedway Rezoning
The Floyd County Commission unanimously rejected a request to rezone a 141-acre tract, including the former Rome Motor Speedway, to heavy industrial. The decision, made on Tuesday, allows the owners to resubmit their application with detailed development plans. The public hearing revealed strong opposition from local residents concerned about pollution and increased traffic, while supporters like the Rome-Floyd Development Authority argued that rezoning would make the site more marketable for new industries. The commissioners' denial, aligned with recommendations from planning staff, was due to uncertainties about potential future uses of the property.
STORY 2: Update: Suspect Charged With Murder in North Rome Shooting Death
A suspect, Nigel Oliver Hall, 21, has been arrested and charged with murder following the discovery of a 56-year-old man shot dead inside a vehicle on Reynolds Street in North Rome. Emergency responders found the victim around 3:51 p.m. on Tuesday. Hall, who lives at the same address, faces charges of murder and aggravated assault. The investigation into the shooting's circumstances is ongoing.
STORY 3: Georgia Educators Rolling Out Literacy Improvement Steps
The Georgia Department of Education is implementing the Georgia Early Literacy Act to enhance early reading instruction, as mandated by legislation passed last year. Starting this summer, all K-3 students must be screened for reading proficiency by August 1. Those identified as struggling will receive personalized improvement plans and intensive interventions. Additionally, by next July, all K-3 teachers must complete state-approved literacy training focusing on the "science of reading," which includes phonics. The legislation aims to address declining reading proficiency among third graders, exacerbated by pandemic-related disruptions, as reported by the 2023-24 Georgia Milestones test results.
