STORY 1:   Floyd County Commission Vice Chair Larry Maxey Dies

Floyd County Commission Vice Chair Larry Maxey has passed away at 76. Maxey, who served on the board for 12 years, was known for his kindness and dedication. He first joined the commission in 2012 and was reelected in 2014, 2018, and 2022, with two years left in his term. A special election is expected. A lifelong Floyd County resident, Maxey was a Vietnam veteran, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was active in his church and worked as a builder and real estate agent. Maxey also chaired the Rome Floyd County Planning Commission and zoning board of appeals.

STORY 2:Push for Community Solar Sparks Debate in Georgia

In Georgia, solar power advocates are pushing for legislation to allow Georgia Power customers to buy electricity from third-party solar providers. A bill supporting "community" solar projects, which are larger than individual rooftop panels but smaller than utility-scale projects, failed in the last legislative session. However, an ad hoc committee is reviewing the proposal. Proponents argue it would benefit the market and grid, while Georgia Power opposes it, citing potential cost shifts to non-participants and existing programs. Critics argue the current system isn't effective, with only 2,000 of 2.7 million customers using Georgia Power's community solar.

STORY 3:  Gordon County 4-H Extension Agent Allie Griner Passes Away

The agricultural community is mourning the loss of Allie Griner, a 4-H extension agent in Gordon County, who passed away at 36 after health issues. A University of Georgia graduate, Griner was known for enhancing the 4-H program, increasing youth and family participation. She is survived by her husband Caleb and son JD, and the couple fostered 11 children. Funeral services were held at Adairsville Baptist Church, with attendees wearing green ribbons in her honor. Griner was praised for her impact on youth and her innovative approach to 4-H programming.

STORY 4: FOOTBALL: Rockmart Holds On to Advance to Class AA Elite 8

The Rockmart Yellow Jackets secured a 37-30 victory over Westside-Macon in the Class AA state playoffs, advancing to the quarterfinals. Key plays included a 31-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Anderson and a 9-yard touchdown run by Cortez Wright. Despite a late-game scare, Rockmart's defense held strong, stopping Westside's final drive with incomplete passes. Quarterback Luke Parker contributed with 113 passing yards and a touchdown. Coach Biff Parson acknowledged the team's struggles but was pleased with the win. Rockmart will face Morgan County next, aiming for continued playoff success.

STORY 5:     Rome Poised to Shift Parking Enforcement Authority

The Rome City Commission will discuss a proposal to contract a private firm for downtown parking management, currently handled by the Downtown Development Authority. They will also hold a public hearing on rezoning a Davis Street property for residential rehabilitation. Additionally, the commission will hear reports from the fire and police departments on recent awards. On the agenda is a resolution to allow bars to serve alcohol on Super Bowl Sunday without meeting the usual food-to-drink sales ratio, and another to increase the basic tow fee to match the county's rate.
