The National Weather Service has confirmed that the tornado that touched down near Jacksonville Monday morning just after 9:30 a.m. was an EF1 tornado with top winds of 100 to 105 mph.
The NWS reported damage from the tornado and thousands were without power as a severe thunderstorm moved through Eastern North Carolina Monday morning.
The NWS forecast office will be sending out a team to survey damage in the Onslow County area after a radar-confirmed tornado touched down north of Jacksonville as part of a storm system that moved from southwest to northeast, said meteorologist Ryan Ellis.
“We’ve heard of trees down and a few trees on houses,” Ellis said.
The National Weather Service posted a photo of a barn destroyed at Silance Hog Farm on Haws Run Road.
Ellis said they won’t have further details until the survey team is able to view the areas impacted.
