Sampson County verbal dispute leads to man’s death

A homicide investigation is underway in Sampson County after a shooting Tuesday left a man dead.

Deputies responded to the 400 block of Seven Mile Church Road in Newton Grove after 11 p.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a gunshot victim, according to a news release from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found a victim who had died from an apparent gunshot wound, the release said. The victim is identified as 48-year-old Marice Kornegay, of the 500 block of Rollingwood Drive in Dudley, according to a statement.

An investigation revealed the suspect and the victim were involved in a verbal altercation that turned violent, according to a news release.

Deputies arrested 28-year-old Shelton Morrison, of the 400 block of Seven Mile Church Road in Newton Grove. Morrison was charged with murder and jailed at Sampson County Detention Center with no bail.
