Pine Forest Middle School student wins Cumberland County Spelling Bee

View descriptionShare

Sophia Tun, a student at Pine Forest Middle School, overcame a discrepancy over a word to win the Cumberland County Spelling Bee on Friday.

Alexandrea Julo, who attends New Century Elementary School, came in second place for the second straight year. Angelo Aldoph, a student at Montclair Elementary School, was third.

Six of the nine competitors were eliminated in the first two rounds before Sophia, Alexandrea and Angelo each spelled a word correctly for six consecutive rounds.

Angelo was eliminated in the ninth round when he incorrectly spelled erstwhile.

In round 11, Sophia was initially told that she had spelled bizarro correctly, but the judges asked for a pause in the competition while they talked among themselves. After a short discussion with Jennifer Lloyd, one of the Spelling Bee coordinators, Sophia was asked to spell another word. She correctly spelled beatific, and the competition continued.

Two rounds later, Alexandrea missed mammalian. Sophia correctly spelled doubloons, then was given the chance to win by spelling a “championship word.” She spelled ultimatum correctly to win the competition.

Sophia will go on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 24-29 in National Harbor, Maryland.
