A man who had been in the Brunswick County Detention Center since March 4 died there early Friday.
According to a news release from Emily B. Flax, public information officer with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Wesley Keith Clark, of Holden Beach, had been in jail on a felony probation violation.
At about 1:30 a.m. Friday morning, jail staff called Brunswick County 911 to report that Clark was unresponsive. Staff and medical personnel attempted to revive Clark but were unsuccessful, the release said.
Despite his age, Clark appears to have died of natural causes, the release said, and officials are not treating his death as suspicious or self-inflicted.
An autopsy will be performed to determine why Clark died.
According to the release, the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office, and Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram have requested that the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards conduct an internal investigation.
