State and local health officials have warned against large gatherings during a time of surging coronavirus infections, especially indoor events. As a result, many people are hitting the outdoor trails to get exercise and explore nature.
Here in the Sandhills region, hiking trails offer a wide array of beautiful scenery. For some people, taking part in first-day hikes has become a tradition.
While no organized first-day hikes are planned, nearby parks will be open on New Year's Day. Everyone is asked to follow guidelines from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Be aware that parks may be busy New Year's Day.
