Graham and Haw River officials are blaming heavy rains for sewage spills last week.
Graham’s Boyd Creek Lift Station, 1125 Ingold Drive, spilled 49,800 gallons, according to the city, over 15 hours from 10:30 a.m. Thursday to 1:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6–7. The untreated wastewater went into Bowden Creek, which is in the Cape Fear River Basin.
Haw River spilled an estimated 500 gallons Thursday, Feb. 6, at West Main and Hill streets. That spill went into an unnamed tributary of the Haw River.
Both cities say they notified the N.C. Division of Emergency Management in good time, per state law.
