I mean, I'm just not gonna let you let you just get up out of here without that understandable. It's the R and B. So we we we're gonna we're gonna work it out, Mike, I got you. Uh, it's got to a days about rapt I know right, Nate, we can't have you wrap it down. He look, man, the draft is eleven days away. Uh tell us, you know, talk to the people. Man, how was the draft like at this moment? Draft? What was the process like right now? For those young cats? Man, it's uh, it's nerve racking. Mike. You remember, um, the first time I realized that I had a chance to be drafted was my junior year. I came out early, and I remember my agent saying, your life is about to change. And I'm thinking to myself, like, what do you mean are you come out early? Bro? You came out early? Well? I led the nation my tune year, and I knew that I had to take advantage of the opportunity to make as much money as I can. And being in the White Conference at Nevadarino, I was thinking to myself, is it possible for me to get one hundred and thirty eight catches in one season? Again? No, At that time, it was second all time in the n C Double A. So my agent is like, look, you come out. You're a late first rounder, second rounder at the latest, third, and you'll be able to set up your family for a long time. Not only will you be able to set up your family, but you have a chance of really having a long career. And I was like, you know what, I'm gonna do it. There's no other reason why I would stay. So I went out and I declared for the draft, and there's all these teams saying, hey, well, you're one of the best receivers in this class. We're not sure about the competition level at Nevada. But what we do know is that you are a legitimate wide receiver and your versatile and some teams, I remember San Francisco in particular, said they were gonna give me in the first round. I'm thinking first round. Uh so when you so, look, when you thought about first round? Did you? Did you what you're thinking? Bl blink you already know. I was thinking to myself like, this was before that rookie cap and all that stuff kicking. So first round, if you got drave in the first round, you're making money. So for me, I'm thinking, all right, if I get drafted in the first round, I'm gonna be on some buy a mansion, a fancy car or Rolex. I'm young. I didn't come from a ton of money. You know. My mom and dad worked two jobs and over time was a necessity. So for me, like my concept of having new money was buying new things. Obviously at thirty four, I think differently now, But I was twenty one, like new one when I got drafted. So um, I was sitting at home first round went by, I was like, okay, I didn't expect to go so I wasn't that mad. The second round went by. I wasn't upset about second round going by, was more upset that other receivers that I felt like I was better than when now there's guys that went before me that were legitimately better than me, Andre Johnson and Boding Monsters phenomenal careers. And then third round came by. I was sleep like upset, sleep likes off. I want to watch this. So I laid down my phone rang I think I got a flip on cell phone at a fliph on cell phone and uh, They're like, hello, it's this nip bro. So I'm like, yeah, um my mom and dad are They're looking at me like what's going on? Who's that? What's that? And I was like, I don't know how you doing. This is Mike Tyson with the Minnesota Vikings. Are you ready to be a Viking? And I said, uh, yeah, yeah I am. He said, oh, you don't sound so excited, young man. I said, oh, I just took a nap. He said he took a nap, turning felt draft and I was like, yeah, I'm sorry about that. He's like, well, let's it's time for you to wake up. You want to be a Viking and I was like cool. At that moment, that's when everything changed. What's up with your story, dude? So you know me, man, I people didn't know what position I was gonna play. Running back, quarterback, defensive back. I mean I backpedal for teams everything. Um, I knew I was gonna be a role player or whatever. All I asked is that they watched me throw the ball. So at my pro at my pro day, man, I threw the ball. I ran routes, I did running back stuff, I did receiver stuff. I backpedal for some people, I didn't. I did the entire nine man. So you know, for me leading up to the draft, not only did I not only was their anxiety about where I was gonna play, like whether with state I was gonna play in, but it was also anxiety about what position I was gonna play Because people don't understand man Cepenn State, Man, great university. You know, love all my experiences there. Um, I never practiced at another position other than quarter back. And I practiced a little bit at whide receiver my junior year when I left the team and receiving, but I've always practiced that quarterback And just the Thursday or Friday before the game, they said, you're playing this other position. You're playing running back. And I had to go adjust. Or you're gonna slop, you're gonna start the slot receiver. Or you're gonna return kicks. Oh, you're gonna return punts. I mean all of that, man. And Uh, it was tough because I just didn't know. It was the unknown. I had went to the Senior Bowl, had the forty niners. Um they called coach Uh. I played against that their coaching staff. Their coaching staff had no idea they wanted me. Um. And I remember I had a little get together at a hotel in State College because that's why I was training, and all my people from Richmond came up. You know. That's when the first three rounds was on the first day, you know. And I didn't get drafted at all. Oh dude, I had just bought a car. Just drove the car off off the showroom floor, Nate. It was two thousand and seven. Um uh Tahoe Chevy Tahoe. Yeah. Man. At the time, you know, I was doing my think brand new. It was two thousand and six, it was still brand new, right, Just drove it off, right, and I'm thinking, I'm not gonna be able to pay for this truck. I had no clue. I had no nowherewithal no, you know, nothing understanding of the other rounds and finances and all that. I just saw it. Hey, yo, I didn't go. I didn't get draft to have all these people show up. I didn't get drafted on that Saturday night, man, I cried bro. I mean, dude, it heard because I could have. You know, I took a couple of visits um to a couple of teams in Miami, Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh had traded their second round pick for two threes, and I just thought for sure I was one of those third rounders. And the next morning I'll sleep, I said, you know what, I'm not even gonna even wake up for the draft, and and it woke. You know, the draft was early the next day. I'm pissed. I had twenty three miss calls from a four or eight number. I'm like with it. I had still I hadn't even turned on the television yet. I had no idea what was going on. Something like, man, whatever it calls again, I pick up. It's Mike Nolan. You know what I mean? Scott mcclaud those guys. Hey, man, we're gonna pick you pretty earlier today. I said whatever, whatever, Wait wait, you said whatever. If you was gonna pick me while you give me yesterday, you know what I'm saying. When I had all these people show up, you know what I mean? You know, but again, I still had no clue that I mean a fourth rounder, Bro, that's a that's good money. That's good money. That's it's a good bit and it's a good pick. Right. So they just said he said, I remember Scott laughing, Scott mclau laughing. Hey, Mike, Mike, look just turn on your television. Man, I'm gonna we're gonna get off the phone with you. Just turn on your television. Because you know they had they had at the Senior Bowl. Man, we had eight dinner together, we had hung out. I mean, they knew exactly who I was. They knew I was a no nonsense type of guy. I knew I was gonna tell him exactly what was on my mind. And so I hung up, you know, by a peace, took a shower. I look out, I heard it. I think it was I forget who it was. It wasn't it wasn't a commissioner. It wasn't Paul Tackling, but at the time it was like the assistant commissioner or whatever that they did the second day and they called my name, and I'm like, oh, with a hundred pick I'm like Mike rob Oh. And then the first thing I did was I called my agent. I'm not gonna lie. And for my far listeners out there, this lets you know, like kind of the background and some of the guys that come into the league where we come from. Right. I had no idea of my finances or money. The first thing I did was called my agent, Like, what's that signing bonus? Gonna look black? Hey, seriously, I needed to know the difference between third round, in fourth round and fifth round? Was it my signing bonus? I think my signing bonus? Uh was like for yeah, four and some change like forty five. And I was rolling. I felt like I was rolling in money, man, And I thought to myself, they just gave me after hold up, but after taxes you didn't take on no obviously, ast how are you doing? We we just got joined, but we just got joined. Oh say yo, we get a woman's opinion on some of these topics. Damn Henderson is in the building. But but but checked this out, man, seriously, no concept of finances And look, I'm I'm gonna digress a second man. Okay, I went to my Penn State this past weekend. I through an event. Um I've introduced my foundation to state college, our signature program where where we basically created a fantasy football learning platform for high schoolers the middle schoolers. But anyway, I came back and it was our two thousand five. They did a little reunion and did a little something was coming back, right, they announced us during the spring, the spring football game and all of those things. And Bro, first of all, I've seen guys that I hadn't seen in over ten years. Okay, but one thing I left there thinking about one thing that was on my mind heavily. Bro as I as I adapted and Bro hugged all my guys. Right, that was a quarterback, that was you know, it was my team. I felt I felt personally responsible for those guys. Right, every person was doing well, making money, succeeding in life, CEOs or or or or part of the part of the financial sector. Um UM teachers, UH, football coaches, all influence and the impacting young people. Right, And as I think, and I you know, I hope all the football players that listened to us are listed R and B podcasts. You have to play this game for more than just finances, because that's what made me think about it. You have to play this game. You have to go for a deeper impact though. And I think about coach paternal or my my, my head coach in college, and he had a grand experiment right there. We're gonna be able to play football, right, and in school is gonna mean something. You're gonna get degrees, right, and you're gonna be impactful in society. And I'm just it's crazy. I come back ten years later and you see everybody, and that's what happened. We want to Orange both finished third in the country, boom, top of you know, guys got drafted all of that. Right, you come back ten years later and everybody I'm talking about, everybody is doing well off. That's awesome. That's awesome. So my bad, my bad, my bad. Shneika, how are you what's going on? Tired? You're tired? I mean I'm tired. You're tired. I feel like I just I feel like walking. Just walking with this baby makes me feel like I played a super Bowl every every so look, just just so you know, I took a biologist sex class and college school me okay, and I had to wear a pregnancy suit around campus for a day. I felt, I feel you feel I feel you, Nate. I'm telling you, bros, how many months were you I was not? I was in. I was in my last time. Yes, I was there. And I couldn't bend over the top of my shoes, none of that. I had to get coaches to help me all of that. Bro, it was bad. I had Ashley needs the other day. I ain't even know. I know, I didn't even know. Walk around, got to my destination, put my feet up, and I was like, now, somebody could have told me something something because they know I can't see. Well, look, man, let me get you all thoughts. So, um, we're in l a Okay. They put off a huge trade last week, huge straight all right, um put coming up to the number one pick. They're also going to be on Hard Knocks this season. I have my own views about Hard Knocks because you know, I like Hard Knocks honestly, right, I love it. I feel as a fan, you love it, right, But I don't know, Nate, if you were a player trying to make the team, would you want all your business? I don't care like that. I mean seriously, because when you get there, I've gotten a call. Hey may bring. But if if you're established, if you're established player, it doesn't matter. Your brand becomes bigger's if you're an established player. But come on, man, how many of these guys on these teams out of fifty three guys are established players? Yeah, all of a lot of guys are interchangeable. Now, see I look at it like this, man, I look at it like this, and I'm making in trouble for saying that. But I don't care. And she gotta get your opinion on this. Also, I'm jumping all over the place. I feel like since guys are making more money, right, guys are making more money. You see guys like Megatron, see guys like Marshawn. Okay, you got fifty something million. I was in the bank. Why would I keep on banging myself up? Right? So I feel like you're gonna see guys exit in that way. But then you look at the bottom of the league, right, the guys who are in the league four and five years right when they try to get that second contract. It's easy. It's more it's economically better for a team to just draft another rookie. So where did those guys come? So that's what I'm saying. And I know we got we jumped back and forth from l A or whatever. But I don't know. Most of the team are guys that are interchangeable. I don't know if hard knocks would be great for those guys or would it be a distraction. I don't know. That's just that's just me. I would think though, and I don't know. I mean, I'm not a player, but I would think that there has to be an attraction to the celebrity of it. It's show business, you know, And that's the part of being an athlete now, is the show business side of it. Now. I don't think i'd want to be the dude who's like getting cut on TV and crying. But but if you bring it and you say you want to have a part in it, that goes along with everything. You know what I'm saying, Come on what you think listen. I'll say this. When I was in Detroit, UM, we were on the list to have hard knocks in Detroit, and UH coach Jim Schwartz, our head coach, denied it. He said, nah, you know, we need to focus on winning. We uh, we got a young team and we have other things that are more important as a vet on the team. I was disappointed. I was building my brand. I just started my clothing line. I thought to myself, I'm about to take advantage of this opportunity to make my name, my brand, my post career um even bigger than what it already is. But then I talked to other guys like Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson. They said, no, we don't want it. I didn't, I don't want it. Calvin doesn't like attention. Matt Stafford is a guy that just wants to play ball. So I think it was a mixed bag of individuals that I love the idea, and other guys said, no, we don't want to be on blast like that. We don't. We're already magnified when you have hard knocks in your building, cameras everywhere and not just at the facility. The main stars like Calvin and Sue and and Stafford, they got cameras in their cars. So UM, I understand the mindset. But for me to your point, Mike, if guys are contemplating leaving this game early and take advantage of the dollars, then they want to have that that, you know, shine on them. So if you retire seven eight years into it, which is you know, not necessarily a long career, but some would say you retire early if you're still capable playing, then this could build your brand. Like how many how many players are you more familiar with because of Hard Knocks? That's a lot. Aren't guys doing their own reality now anyway? There snapchatting there, put they make on Twitter. You don't have to be on Hard Knocks at this point to have your own reality show. Okay, and you bring up you bring up snap I know you guys heard of J J. Wat. You remember J J. Watt doing this his social media stuff he posted during his you know, a video of his workout dunk Kobe's last game? Right? Uh? You think JJ doing too much? Man? I mean you think you're doing too much. I don't know what happened. What happened? Let me go you in right here? So doing Kobe's final game where you're dropping sixty, Everyone's watching j J. Watt goes on Snap and he's like, well, I'm not trying to watch Kobe. I'm trying to be like Kobe. So it's like dj J, come on, we know you're working hard. And then just yesterday with the you know, the weather situation in Houston, he posted, you know, a snap of him being at the facility working out, and like, j J, we get it, bro, you're a hard worker. I mean didn't even look at him on Hard Knocks last year though. I mean, you don't get me wrong. I know you work hard. I know you're doing everything, but it's it was dramatic. I'm like, zoo, snap, you know I'm this guy. I mean it was like rocking the freezer. I didn't see. I didn't know that. I didn't know he posted a snap. You know, it's kind of saying, hey, well I'm not watching. That's kind of alright, j J. Relax, everybody get yeah. I mean, I mean, from a woman's standpoint, how how do you view J J Watt? Listen. I think it's like that friend who we all have that I have, who's like at the gym or running or whatever, and on Facebook or whatever, you gotta see a picture every five minutes of the gym, Saltie, like, that's what I feel about. Look, I get you. Your body is banging, it's tighter, are doing it boo? But I know too much. You know more than I need to I ever needed to know. We get it, yeah, man, And don't get me wrong, I know. I think JJ is probably the most dominant, dominant guy, dominant defensive player in this league. But does he really have to have his persona grow anymore? I mean, does he have to? Does he have to be the one promoted because it's already there. Your thing is over promotion. Though you're right, he's not gonna lose from it. He can't lose from it, and it isn't necessarily like negative, right, right, he's doing it in a way. But when you heard when you nate, you just heard that he posted a snap during the Kobe's last game, we already know how Kobe is seen amongst athletes. Right, your first reaction was, I mean it's a it's a different era now. I mean, social media is the biggest tool in vehicle for you know, stars, and you would think, oh J j W, you're established, you don't need to do that. But once you get on that path of promoting yourself, it's hard to jump off. So I get where he's coming from. You just gotta be a little bit more selective. But like Shinika said, it's not negative, so I can't be too mad at it. But you know what, Nate, or so hold on Anna flip for a second, right, because I gotta put you on the spot dog. And we had a discussion about this last week. You promised we was gonna have somebody on the shoulder this week. People say that's what makes him him, right, like it's that part of his sona, that's what makes I mean, this is a guy who you know, didn't necessarily have the you know, the highest rated high school collegiate playing career, and then now he's the best defender in the game. Like maybe that's inspiring somebody like, oh wow, look how hard he works and look at the level he's at, So maybe you know for those Yeah, some people called out Ray Ray ray Lewis in his day for doing too much and obviously it was in a different way. And you know, ray Lewison do no wrong to me, but there are some people out there he thought that Ray Ray was too much with it. How did you guys feel about that, that Ray was too much? Yeah, to hear a good friend of mine though. Man, it's tough, but look Ray, he's a legend. Man. It's hard to say anything bad as going too much, but but I do, and I have heard guys on this team. I have her tell him. That's like, come on down a little bit. To imagine if Snapchat and Instagram was at its height when to our owns was playing. You want to talk about a guy who, uh, he captivated everybody when there wasn't even a vehicle for him to promote himself. He was using just normal day to day TV, local news, and he was making you know, NFL Network Sports Center every single night, and everybody thought, man, you're doing too much. But his brand is built and on top of that, he was a monster on the field. So for me, I feel like, just like Shnika said, there's no such thing as over promotion. Now, there such thing as over saturation. People can get. Over promotion is just building your branch continuing, you know, every single day, trying to promote yourself so people can buy into whatever you're selling, whether that's your sneaker line or your your clothing are just your your personality. But over saturation is people getting too used to you and turning you off because you're always in your face, in their face, like promoting yourself in a wrong way. And that's my opinion, crossed into the over saturation territory towards the tail end of his he did he did? And also what the thing about Ocho? His his numbers telled off to the thing about to Yo. He put up numbers everywhere he went. Man, Yeah, you didn't like him too much, but if you threw them the ball enough, he was gonna win games for you. And I think Ocho that that's kind where he messed up, you know what I mean. His his his actual play dropped off. And if you're gonna be promoting yourself and putting yourself out there like that, first and foremost we play football, Yeah, you better have a product, you better be out there putting put putting yourself out there like that. So I don't know, I think that's still close to being the same thing. Nate, No, I really do. Man, if you're putting yourself out there is and that's saturating. If you over promoting yourself in't that saturating it? No, No, because you can. It's all. It's all about brand building anyway. You know what I what I try to tell these young guys when they come out is, um, this is a small window of time in your life. It seems like it's forever when you're in it. Mike. You know, when you're playing in the NFL, you're like, this is the beginning and this is the end. All. I love this sport. But what we have to tell these guys is the light at the end of the tunnel is small when you first get in, but then towards the end it gets bigger and brighter, and then eventually you're like, oh man, I'm I'm out this tone it's over. I can't jump as I run as fast, I don't have the same following. So when you're in it, take advantage because here's the thing. The league will forever sell your image. The NFL. We signed our rights over right, they have our images forever. So they got your highlights, Mike, They're gonna run them until they can't run them anymore. The super Bowl you went to and what you guys did, and you pumping up the team and being in the huddle. So what I thought halfway through my career is if they're gonna sell my image, keep making money off of my image and my videos and my highlights forever, even when I'm dead, then I have to I have to grab every single fan, every single following while I'm innute. And if I can take that out of the league when I'm done, then I can benefit from it. And that's how built the things that I have. You know, I created Lying Blood when I was in Detroit because I'm a Leo and I played for lines and majority of the people that buy that brand, our fans that follow me when I was in Michigan that sd It also helped him create the videos, the wrapping and all that that he has on YouTube. One of feels YouTube right now that I'm not in. I'm not even in the video. How did you feel about that? Biggest stuff off just been through very you. So the question is, was that a good look like Shanika right now with the crown over with my man, Earl Thomas potentially stealing the spotlight away from his bride, So you can't tell us it's not it's not still in the spotlight. I think I think, Nate, you said, you said it perfectly on Total Access last night. You're setting up, You're letting them know. I mean, I'm your king. I'm gonna try to protect you. I'm gonna do everything I can um to be there for you. I'm gonna serve you, all of that type of stuff. And I thought, you know, I thought it was cool. It's a it's a message. I don't know how many kids he has, but I know he has at least one. Um, he's the king, she's the queen. And he walked down that aisle saying, listen, this is royalty and we're building something special here and we have royalty in our blood. And you know, to be honest, being a young African American athlete, you're trying to set the standard because there's a lot of misconceptions. You know, people have these perceptions of you know, guys who make it big and have money. And I think he's trying to dispel that and say, you know what, I am a king and you know, not to get too deep on us, but we're weren't cut from that clause. Yeah, that's where a lineage is. So um you know, I love it. So if I had to decide, uh yeah or not, I'll say yeah. I like his approach and his mindset, and it's sending a huge message to a lot of people that need to hear if your man came down, I'm gonna give my own man or not on it. But I'm gonna give him an or not. But but for all Thomas, I think it works, you know what I mean. I mean, I think he's big personality, and I think that all goes with him. I think he owned it personally. Why why why it just wouldn't have worked. Why would look like a straight clown? You would have looked like a straight clown. Damn.
