NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero and Judy Battista discuss top news stories from around the NFL including the latest developments on Justin Herbert's injury and where the 49ers stand with Brandon Aiyuk on the contract situation. Next, our insiders are joined by Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert, to talk about Purdue and his outlook towards the new season. We're later joined by fantasy analyst Adam Rank who gives us great players overlooked on fantasy and later answer which actor would be the best to play John Madden in a biopic.
A little bit of drink May means a lot more. Talk on Boston Sports Radio today about the possibility the rookie could have earned the starting job. We're gonna break down May's performance. We know the Dak Prescott's going to be the Cowboys starting quarterback. He's been in camp even without a new contract. What he's saying about it now in Miami, the Dolphins quarterback, of course, already got paid. Nobody happier about that than running back where he moster. But how is that my Miami offense looking lest most himself? When he joins this show in just a little bit, it's a Friday night edition Welcome Inside with the Insiders, presented by Harbor Freight alongside Judy Bautista. I am Tom Pelisera. We will get to all of those stories, and Judy is very excited about this. We will cast the Madden movie all the big spots if they, you know, decide to pivot away from the whole Nicholas Cage thing. But let's start out, Judy, because we can with some actual football. It's the Eagles, It's the Patriots last night. It's that guy, Drake May, who certainly made the most of his opportunity. But first we got some Jacoby Brissette. Patriots were roaring right down the field. When bresset a little late across the field, that's gonna be an interception for Avonte Maddox, who rumbles forty seven yards on that one. Jared Mayo drop Mayo rather yeh left than pleased with the start for his team. Jacoby Brissett maybe try that. No, I don't think they're gonna be doing that, even with the new dynamic kickoff and incomes. Drake may first passes a twelve yard completion to Javon Baker. They would drive for a field goal on that possession. The next time the Patriots got the ball, it's may again around the right side, takes the handoff, takes it in himself. Patriots lead ten to three. Drake could have celebrate that a little more, couldn't he touchdown drive?
Jacoby just is saying, and the mccaughdy twins that you got to get a better celebration when you go into.
The end zone a touchdown.
Yeah, I really plan on Russian when I probably should have thought of one. Usually I'm thinking cold to the finger roll. But I'm just happy to get in the end zone, happy to score points. I think, uh, yeah, it's funny get out there, and I'm glad the weather hold held off. And uh and that thought the guys did a good job. I thought it before they fought hard.
Do you see this as being a competition between the two of them right now as to.
Who's going to be, you know, the starting quarterback against Cincinnati?
I do you know?
We have three more days of training camp practices and it's our job as coaches to evaluate, and the competition isn't over. They're still going to go out there and they have to show not only there you know, themselves and the coaches, but also their teammates. So it's definitely still a competition.
Certainly a big night for Drake may You can look at the comparison here. Of course, it's pre season. You're playing with and against different players. Never want to see the old blue Tarski zero point zero passery for Jacobe Brissett. We'll see how they handled the third preseason game. But as you heard Rod Mayo say, it is still a competition, which Juny, going all the way back to the draft when you had twelve picks, six quarterbacks, ticket we all looked at Drake May and said, you know, in all likelihood, this is the one guy who probably needs to sit the most. He needs a year. He's coming out of that dumb down offense at North Carolina. Just let him sit percent the perfect guy. But we tend to overreact, especially at a market like Boston.
Here.
What did you make a Drake May's performance and where the competition stands now?
Well, his performance was certainly good, and I think it gives Patriots fans hope for the future. Last week was rough for the Patriots. They did not look good in the joint practice with the Eagles, and then they traded their best player in Matthew Judhon, which I think was as clear a signal as any that this is going to be a rebuilding season. So what Drake May did last night, and the stats not really reflective of how good he looked, quite frankly, but what he did last night was give you some hope for future days to come right. He used his legs. He didn't just run in for the touchdown, but he was scrambling around, moving away from pressure. He showed off the arm. His best play was actually, I think an incomplete pass deep down the middle that Jabon Baker had on his hands and just couldn't hold onto. But that's the one that really got the fans excited. So I think this was encouraging. Did he win the job? I don't think so. I still would be really surprised if they go into the season and Jacoby pres said it's not the starting quarterback. Don't forget this is a decision about organizational philosophy. What is the best way to develop a young quarterback. Is it throw him in there and let him get his lumps right out of the gate, or is it keep him on the bench for a little while and let him learn and then maybe go to him. We'll see, but certainly he closed the gap with this performance, and I think we're very curious now to see Rod Mayo handles. The third preseason game with both quarterbacks, it was a.
Fun Joe Milton Mania week. Judy, I think coming off of that initial preseason game, the plan was always though git Drake may some more run here in the second Sason. Again, the most encouraging thing I think to me is when you talk about Drake may he has all the athletic ability and you could see that come out, and also having a little bit of adversity. Everybody I talked to in the pre draft process said one thing I like about Drake May was everybody knows he came up in a very athletic family. He had the older brothers. He's used to kind of getting the crap kicked out of him and then saying, Okay, I want right back in. And you saw him come out and play some pretty good football last night. And it is just getting started here on NFL Network in the second fall preseason week, it's a quadruple header on Saturday. We got Bengals Bears, we got Lions, Chiefs, we got bill Steelers, Cowboys, Raiders, Packers, Broncos. In three of those games, the late three, you've got a legit quarterback competition to sort out. You do not have one for the Cincinnati Bengals. Joe Burrow is back from that wrist injury that he had back in last season that ended his season. As you see right there, the Bengals going to open in orange, going with the all orange uniforms for their season opener. There's the guy I was talking about, Joe Burrow, who declared himself ready to roll for Week one against the Patriots last November. He suffered that season ending risk injury. It said early in camp it still wasn't fully natural. When I went through Cincinnati to everyone said, he has looked really good throwing the football on the field. Matthew Stafford, another veteran quarterback, has been off the field recently for the Rams, dealing with a little bit of a hamstring. Sean McVay has kind of pumped the brakes downplayed the significance of the hamstring issue. Matthew Stafford quite frankly, he's always playing through like seven different things. A hamstring for a guy who's not exactly a running quarterback, not that big of a deal. Never want to see soft tissue stuff in August. But no reason to sound the alarms just yet. Meanwhile, for the Chargers, justin Herbert, now this is file footage here. He's not quite doing all this just yet. But he is out of the walking boot, which is a good sign for the continuation of his progress moving forward. That was what Jim Harbaugh said. He is on track. He's going to be in that boot for two weeks. He is now out of the boot and is still expected to be back for week one. We still wait, white smoke from Santa Clara. Where the forty nine ers are. I don't know. About six months into the standoff now with Brandon Ayuk, about two weeks into this being at a fever pitch, no finality yet. As Mike Grifolo has reported on this show, they have been very close on virtually every metric. Ayuk was on the field wearing team gear this week. John Lynch the GM still hoping this thing gets done sooner than later.
No, there's nothing blood. I mean, negotiations can get heated. I think it's his first time going through that, But no bad blood. I mean, if you know people that are here, see Brandon out here, there's love, a lot of love and respect for the relationship we've had and continue to have and hopefully we'll have into the future.
That's me exhausting, I would think, Judy at this point, because there's only so many ways you can say. Yeah, we're trying. We've offered a lot of money, he wants a little bit more money. We're trying to make this thing come together. Here, there's still the possibility. Listen, We've seen a lot of twists and turns throughout the course of this saga. The trade possibility is still out there. But as we've said over and over on this show for the past week, here, really the forty nine ers focus has been trying to get a deal done. They still just aren't there yet.
This, though, was the most optimistic I think the Niners have sounded, at least in public, because there was absolutely no mention here of the possibility of a trade. It's like that never even happened, hasn't even been in consideration. This was this sounded like a general manager who is in any other contract negotiation, big contract negotiation with a star player, like, oh, we're it's taken a long time, and we're really trying, and you know, we really want to get this done. But no mention about the idea that maybe he wants to move on. And of course that brings us back to the question of there was a trade request and the Steelers may be interested in maybe other teams too, But as Brendan, are you really interested in moving on? It sure doesn't sound that way from what John Lynch said, and it absolutely does not sound like the forty nine Ers are prepared to move on either.
As Brandon Ayuk responded on Instagram comment one week to goo tonight. There's two options. He's still waiting for the forty nine ers and himself, of course, who pick which one? That is going to be some good news. Meanwhile, for the forty nine ers, Christian McCaffrey spot today working out individually on the side again. File footage right here of Christian McCaffrey. But he is continuing to make progress back. He had suffered a calf strain about a week and a half ago. They're just going easy on him. No reason to panic just yet. I know fancy drafts are coming up, but everything seems to continue to be trending toward good things for Christian McCaffrey. Rahim Moster is full go after battling his own injuries down the stretch last season. How's he feeling and how is that Dolphin's offense coming together with all that speed for twenty twenty four? Let's ask him. Raien Moster on The Insiders next, presented by Harbor Freight.
People work for the emotion they handle ball.
To Mostert, there's a lot in a touchdown, his nineteenth touchdown of the year, breaking the team record held by Rock Clayton.
Previously were touched on number twenty sweeping for the luck.
He's got it the.
Lock into the D zone.
The Gopens are.
Running away with his name earlier New York Jets Joe.
That is twenty of That sounded wrong.
Welcome back to the Insiders, presented by Harper Freight. That was Raheemohstert breaking the touchdown record for the Miami Dolphins. Let's look at these Madden speed ratings. This is nuts for the Miami Dolphins. Tyreek Kill ninety nine, Jaalen Waddle ninety seven. Raheem Moster comes in at ninety five. He's the fourth fastest guy on the team. I bet he's going to take exception to that. And then look at this. This is what he tweeted or x whatever we're calling it now. Can't believe it's year ten. And if it's year ten, that has to mean Raheem Mostert, it's been a long time since you were in college. It's been a long time since all of us were in college. But it's College Colors Day and we're going to talk about that. You've got the Purdue boiler Makers sweatshirt on. I'm wearing them by any Hurricanes cam Wolf. My colleague is wearing Houston I like that sweatshirt. Good color, raheem. Thanks for joining us talk to us about why you're into College Colors Day.
Yeah, first and foremost, thank you guys for having me.
You know, it's it's definitely an unbelievable journey that I've had thus far, being in year ten and College Colors Day.
I mean, I'm always reving perdue, even in the locker.
Room, you know, against other fellow fellow you know, teammates. You know, we're always chatting and talking about the upcoming games for college season. And what better way than to show your sphere right with your college colors inside the locker room and plus at home.
Raheem.
I love that because I've been in the locker room when some of those debates have come on. Take us into your most intense teammate college rivalry.
What does that look like?
Yeah, you know it's every year, you know, there's always that that one game right that separates your your university from your your teammates university. And for me specifically, it's the it's the last game of the season against the I believe their their name is Indiana or something like that. I don't really pay too much. Their little brothers anyway down the street. So you know, we we we we beat up on them all the time. But yeah, you know, it's just always it's always fun when you got those conversations going inside the locker room and you're able to talk to your teammates about you know, I even talked to Javon already.
I said, Hey, what are you trying to do for this game? You want you want to put you know, shirts on or whatever, because we're playing against.
Oregon this year, so you know, they moved over to the Big Ten, which is which is it's amazing.
It's amazing that that's happening. Those type of moves happen.
So I'm excited about this season and I'm ready to rock these colors.
Brahim, I want you to take us inside the running backs room in Miami because when some people think about the Dolphins offense, you think about the dynamic passing game, but the running game was sixth in the league in rushing. An incredibly dynamic group. What are the goals when you all look ahead to the twenty twenty four season, what are the goals for this group?
Yeah, you know you mentioned it. We were sixth in the league, right We want to be number one. That's our main goal, and the only way to do that is everybody has to be on the same page.
We did an unbelievable job.
We made a lead from year one to year two, and now you know, going into year three in this offense, we got to make it make it even even much more better. So we're just excited about the opportunity. You know, we got the old lineman, they're they're ready to go. We're ready to just put on a show for everyone like we've been doing these past couple of years. And and Scott's the limiting you know, But honestly, at the running back position, we're just going to do our due diligence and try to make the run game that much more explosive, just like it is in the past game.
Rahem, let's talk about you year ten. You're coming off a twenty one touchdown year ball in. But we're getting ready for fantasy drafts and I see you still going eighth round, ninth round, tenth round for fantasy people who are trying to figure out why they would be smart to draft for Hiem Mosher this year.
What would you tell them?
You know, I don't know why they always look at this like age number, like there's an age discrepancy right from you know, a twenty one year old to a thirty two year old. I'm just the outlier. That's all I can tell you. If twenty one touchdowns they can get you hyped up. I don't know what to tell you, but you know, I'm just gonna do what I can do on the field, and you know I'm gonna let statistics take over itself.
Bring me.
I just want to ask you about the offense as a whole, because you haven't had as a unit a whole lot of work altogether. O'Dell obviously has in practice. Now you've got some injuries on the offensive line, Waddle's missed a few practices. Give us your assessment of where the offense is right now compaired to where you want it to be for the season opener.
Yeah, you know, right now we're we're obviously battling through some things, but you know we're also being smart.
That's the most important thing when it comes to the season.
You know, it's always we I think we've done a great job with the next man of mentality. You know, we've we've got guys that are going to step up this for us, this this preseason and going into the regular season, and they're gonna make their hay and do what they gotta do to help health the cause, for the offense and for the team. And we're just excited for those guys against everybody the opportunity.
So you know, we're like this, Like I mentioned, we're.
Dealing through some things right now, but it's always that next man of mentality and we have an understanding about it, and you know, we're just gonna keep going team.
Every time we talk about the Dolphins, we've got to talk about your speed. And with the Olympics just finishing, there's a lot of talk about the Olympic relay legs. You had your teammate Tyreek Kill saying he would beat Noah Lyles in the race.
How do you think you, Tyreek, your guys.
Would square up with some of these Olympic guys if you guys got out there on an un hunted me race.
Yeah.
I mean, obviously it takes training, right, We definitely have to get the training in, But honestly, I think we'll square off pretty good. I like our chances, I like our hids. We could definitely make some make some noise in that regard. You know, you see what Tyree's tweeting right here. Uh man, he's just he's just excited about it. And I mean I might join him, honestly, I might.
I might join them in.
The race and see see where it leads us. But it's just fun, man, and be able to be considered the fastest guys in the league, one of the fastest teams in the league. And you know, we're just trying to trying to carry that statistic all the way through and we take pride in it as well.
All Right, one last question from me rahiim what does the Miami Dolphins team have to do as a team to get over the hump to win playoff games, to make a deep playoff run. Finally, it's been a long time for Miami.
Yeah, it has been like twenty plus years. The one thing that you know is stays consistent is is the healthier team wins. And that's that's the case for us. We just got to stay healthy towards the end of the year. You know, we we were battling through a lot last year, we lost a lot of key guys. But this year, that's that's our main goal. And something that we're trying to really focus on.
Appreciate you.
Raheem Pro Bowl running back Raheem Moster, coming off a thousand plus yard season, twenty one touchdownsan here to tell you that age is just a number.
Yes, when we come back, we're going to hear from Dak Prescott, that guy about how his contract situation, and we're going to get a report on his ankle from our very own Jane Slater coming up next on The Insiders.
The NFL is back with four days of football. When the twenty one four season begins, the Baltimore Ravens playing the Kansaity Chiefs. Watch live September fifth at seven thirty pm Eastern Time on NBC NFL Kickoff twenty days away. It's all presented by YouTube TV. You will not see JJ McCarthy on the field for Week Wander any time in his rookie season, officially placed on injured reserve, and as the team revealed this week, he is out for the entire season, now officially going on IR because of the meniscus repair surgery that he underwent this week. Sam Darnold, now the starter. Minnesota did add mac correll a one time third round, picked by the Panthers, who most recently in the UFL to the roster. The Bengals wrapped up their kicker for the long haul, a three year, sixteen point five million dollar extension for Evan McPherson, who has been unbelievable not just in the regular season but in the postseason. Arkut Mike here full of breaking that news sets professional ward in ten million in new money in the first year of the deal, highest ever for a three year kickoff kicker. Rather extension. Dak bren Scott's still waiting for his new deal, but he has been on the field Fulbard just been in practice. On Thursday, after dealing with a little bit of soreness in that ankle and sitting out for a few days, Dallas traveled to Las Vegas for their preseason game coming up this weekend. But before that, Dak talked about day what is going on with those negotiations.
Good conversations are going I will say that call the negotiations, whatever conversations, A lot of good things are going going on there. So a lot of confidence.
Once again, as.
We've I said, anytime I feel like I've talked about it, I've got confidence in my guys, these guys getting something done.
Welcome back to the Insiders, presented by Harbor Freight, Tom Pillicero, Judy Batista. Join now by our friend Jane Slater. Jane, I feel a little bit bad because I want to say I made a wise crack like three four months ago on the show about Hey, you know, hopefully in the not too distant future, we're not just talking about DAK and the contract and CD and the contract. Here we are, it's August sixteenth, We're twenty three days out from their opener, still talking about the same subjects. Let's start on Dak. What do we know as of now about where things stand terms of the negotiations and also that ankle that has been popping up here in recent weeks.
Yeah, ankle not an issue for those that are worried. I mean some of the concern about that ankle, of course, began this summer when he was spotted going on a.
Fishing trip in a walking boot.
So you know, this is a veteran that knows.
All this picking up for right there, Jane, I would say this with when it comes to Dak Prescott here. Now, remember the Cowboys already used a second franchise tag on him to buy time to get the paperwork done. When they signed was last extension back in twenty twenty one, so tagging back in twenty twenty five really not an option. It cost him close to eighty million dollars for one year, Judy. That really puts the pressure on the Dallas organization here to either get something done prior to the start of the regular season or else have Dak basically turn his attention as we bring back Jane Slater to the regular season. Jane, it does sound like there have been actual negotiations. There have been more than conversations here. Dak certainly painting this as going the right direction. So you were saying about the state of negotiations.
Yeah, I think a lot of us to borrow a term from Jerry Jones, were used to sort of the ambiguity as it relates around here. Zach Martin, look at his deal. It took him three weeks to get that one deal done. And then I'll never forget Ezekiel Elliot. Remember they just kept saying he doesn't deserve this the money that was out there at the time for running back, and then they paid him. Literally, he got signed a week before the season started, and I anticipate that this thing will be equally close for both of them. I would say that I anticipated that Ceedee Lamb would likely get his deal done.
And then you had CD.
We've heard through Calvin Watkins, one of my colleagues a Dallas Morning News that the Cowboys at least talked to Ceedee Lamb in his camp and offered him a deal just around the thirty three million dollar mark that would put him above aj Brown, a little bit below Jefferson. And then with Dak, you had him this week say the conversations were going good. In fact, I had one person take it a little bit further and say that they were on the same page. So what that page is in the book, I don't know. But for fans, you get frustrated with the Cowboys, Tom and Judy. It does sound that they're at least trying to get both of these guys under contract make them feel good about the future. But I still think it's a very good possibility that Dak could say, look, I am set to get paid the highest number of for the quarterbacks out there. I'm going to play this one out. Not dissimilar from what Kirk Cousins did, so, I still think that that one's up in the air still. Even though he characterized it as being good conversations, he made it very clear he wants to be in Dallas. I just think the Cowboys have to figure out a way how are we going to pay these two players. They're going to take up so much of the money here as it relates to the cat space and the roster, and get this thing done.
Well.
If Dak goes to free agency, you can queue us up for the next eight months of talking about Dak and his potential contract situation going into free agency. Let's flip over to the defense very quickly, Jane Treyvon Diggs returned to the practice field. Maybe not for the game this week, but certainly this is going to be, especially if Devonte Adams Blaze a really good test for that Dallas secondary.
Absolutely.
I mean last year you saw the way this secondary step stepped up in the absence of Trayvon Diggs entered himself in the ACL very early in the season. So just seeing him out at practice, he already had a huge grob against the scrimmage with the Rams, got people really really excited. But I talked to multiple people today. He will not be playing in this game against the Raiders. Why would you, Mike McCarthy, Unlike the Las Vegas Raiders who have said that they're going to roll out anybody who's healthy this week, he doesn't need anybody else to get hurt. I mean, even this week we saw Deron Land and we saw Brandon Cooks collide during a pass play. They ended up going to the medical tent, little soreness in their need, but thankfully they were fine. They lost Sam Williams here at camp. They also this week they lost another offensive lineman. He went back to Dallas. He gave him some depth. He's getting surgery, and so they are being cautious with the way they manage these guys. A very good opportunity for some of these young guys still trying to prove themselves to Mike Zimmer as they start making roster cuts, how they can hold up against a guy like Devonte Adams.
Jane, for the record, we would never pull the plug on you when you're talking about Dallas Cowboys news. Jared might have when you're talking about the deck contract. I'm not accusing anyone. I'm just saying, don't really know entirely what happened right there. Thank you very much, look forward to talking with you again soon. Cowboys Raiders one of the quadruple header games on Saturday, TENBM Eastern, live right here on NFL Network, Las Vegas. So trying to decide is it Aidan O'Connell, is it Gardner Minshew? Which mustache? Will Antonio Pierce choose to take him through the twenty twenty four season. Oh, that's going to continue to sort itself out this weekend, and we welcome in our Omar Ruiz to talk more on that situation. Omar, This Raiders offense a lot of different questions that they've got. Certainly the quarterback is the biggest one as we head into twenty twenty four, But what else are they trying to figure out right now on that side of the ball.
Well, no matter who plays quarterback, that tight end will be featured prominently in that offense because of the presence of Brock Bauers and their second round pick last year. Michael Mayer a lot of talk about how Harrison Bryant has had an impactful training camp coming over as a free agent from the Cleveland Browns, and I asked tight ends coach Luke Steckl because of that talent in the tight end room, do they tweak the playbook?
Do they call more plays with.
Twelve personality told me when they were installing the offense, they had everybody learn the base concepts, but because of the confidence in the talent that they have in the tight ends room, in the versatility that that group has, they had them learn a little more of the receiver concepts than they might normally with the tight end group, and that means that will allow them to call similar plays whether they have one tight end on the field, two tight ends or three tight ends.
Eleven personnel, twelve personnel or thirteen personnel.
As far as brock Bauers is concerned, Steckel telling me that he's been so impressed with how strong that brock Bauers plays, whether he's past protecting in the past game staying home, whether he's blocking in the run game, or whether how strong he plays when he has the ball in his hand. He's a type of player and not only doesn't shy away from contact, but seeks contact. He said, that's the type of toughness that just comes straight from the heart. You can't teach that. The type of player that craves violence. He said, some players shy away from that violence. This tight ends group. You know, Bowers, mayor Bryant, the rest of them. They all the type of player that craves at violence. So they look forward to incorporating them heavily. Whether it's Gardner Minshew, whether it's Aidan O'Connell playing quarterback for the Raiders.
Love is the Omar.
They also have a quarterback competition on the other side of the fields with the Denver Broncos. And you know, I'm curious because Sean Payton's this is his second year. Obviously, the first year did not go the way he wanted at all, started very poorly, didn't get a whole lot better. How has it looked so far in these early days of the preseason and from training camp.
Yeah, it sounds like they've had to reevaluate their training camp just a little bit. Sean Payton saying that they've addressed the team how important it is to start fast in a season. They've gone over the first five games for playoff teams, how successful they typically are at the beginning of the year, and they've tried to lay out a training camp that will have a better start for them than the one in five they got last year. In the twenty twenty three season, some of those is becoming more intense in training camp, leading to more competitive situations in camp, and obviously Sean Payton's saying that he wants to win these preseason games. They have young, hungry, impressionable players, and they've set up their training camp with a scrimmage they didn't have a year ago to get them ready for a training camp. And after the game against the Colts on Sunday, Sean Payton told me that their competitive spirit was the most important thing for him in that operation. The way they got in late on Saturday. They played a game in the preseason, which is unusual, eleven o'clock their body's time. They responded, they got the win, and they've set up their preseason to play every game on Sundays so they can get that routine down to get them ready for the regular season. Because of their seventeen games, fifteen of them are on Sundays. You only have one Monday night or only one Thursday night, or so every little subtle change like that they're hoping leads to a better start and avoid that one in five like they had last season.
Bo Nicks gets the start Sunday night against the Packers, trying to make his closing argument to be in the starting quarterback and you can see it. You guessed it live on NFL Network eight pm Eastern Time on Sunday, Thank you very much, Omar. Fantasy drafts are coming up if you haven't had one already, Adam Ranks got some advice to you on some big names that just aren't getting drafted that high enough. Why you should ride those chalk ponies. Next on The Insiders. Check out Fantasy Live Monday through Wednesday next week at six pm the Eastern only on NFL Network. All of NFL Networks fantastic experts will give you all the insight you need to rule your fantasy draft. Or you know, you could just watch this next segment and feel like you've been made whole on that very subject. Welcome back to the Insiders, presented by Harvard Freight, Tom Pelicero, Judy Mattista, now joined by our Adam Rank. Adam, I know you want to talk to us about some guys that are maybe they're the bigger names, right, like the opposite of sleepers. They're so good they're so established that somehow people are just missing how consistent, how reliable, how good these guys are. So give me a name of somebody who might be going a little lower in fantasy drafts, even though everything about their history shows they are somebody you should be counting on.
Well, let's talk about Cooper Kupp And last season I was going around on all these shows talking about Pooka and Nakua, saying you should draft him, and now we've gone the other way. It's kind of like when they open up the five guys here in Southern California and everybody stop going to in and out for a couple of weeks. I'm like, what are you doing? This is still a better burger. And I'm looking at this Rams offense, and Sean McVay is shown throughout his history that he can support two number one wide receivers, one of them being a one A and one of them being a one B. And while everybody's drafting Pooka and Akua, they're allowing Cooper Cup to drop to the third or fourth round. And that is where I am going to strike. I am going to be showing some respect, showing some deference to Cooper Cup because he has been so good for us for so long.
Now he's being neglected.
Adam.
I can't believe the next name that is on my list, because every Jets fan is thinking about this person, certainly not overlooking him.
A Demanday Adams.
Yeah, that's the Jets are certainly not disrespecting him, and I think most people who enjoy football do not disrespect Devontay Adams. But in fantasy circles he continues to tumble. And I don't know if it's partly because of the documentary that was on Netflix, which saw Devontay Adams be set with this quarterback play. Well, there's a new guy in town, Gardner Minshew should be quite an upgrade for him. And even last season, with everything that was going on, he was still the wide receiver ten in fantasy circles. This year, I expect him to take a step forward. I think one of the reasons of having Brock Bauers there will open things up for him. So again, when you're sitting there in your drafts, you're in the third and fourth round, when you see the Banta Adams available to you, don't don't rub your eyes. Instead, make the move and draft of Vante Adams.
All right, give me another one. Who else? Who else do we to show some respect to as we enter the draft.
Let's talk about Kyle Pitts.
And I don't think that there's been anybody in fantasy communities who's had to wear it more than me when it comes about talking about Kyle Pitts. And even as I bring him up this season, people like, we've been here before, Actually you haven't. There's a new offensive coordinator in Zach Robbins, Zack Robinson. There's a new quarterback and Kirk Cousins. And here's what I want you to know about Kyle Pitts. Since twenty twenty one, he is one of four players who has one thousand receiving yards on targets of more than ten air yards.
He is a deep threat. But here's the thing.
Kirk Cousins has the highest passer rating amongst quarterbacks on targets of more than ten air yards. This is a perfect combination. The Kyle Pitts revenge tour starts.
Now. It's a reunion like he was great as a as a rookie.
It's kind of like having Tom DeLong rejoined Blink one eighty two it'll be that kind of reunion.
Tom, you should be on board with this, Adam. Every time you're not here, you know what, I miss you. Thanks a lot. Once again, you've been missing Fantasy Live. Right It's back Monday through Wednesday next week. Be sure to be there. Get a lot more rank and the rest of the game coming up after this. Jayden Daniels still technically not named QB one in Washington. We all kind of assume it's coming, namely because he's throwing things like dins to Diami. Let's talk a little bit more about him, the progression he's shown during the course of camp, what it means for the Commanders. Next you back to the Insiders presented by Harbor Freight. Commanders and the Dolphins had a joint practice this week. You can see Tua dappen up. One of the guys could go one of the future stars of the NFL. J Daniels him won't smell a lot of time around both these guys here over the past month. As we welcome him back to the show alongside Judy Batista and meet Tom Pelicio can tell me about Jayden Daniels. We know that Dan Quinn has said he's shown everything and more that they wanted to see. Still hasn't actually been named QB one, But where do they see the growth through the course of this camp.
Yeah, Tom came away very impressed watching Jayden Daniels Thursday against that Dolphins defense. He saw a lot of exotic Bliss looks and really look comfortable and control. Now Miami didn't have Jalen Ramsey or Javon Holland, but one thing that really stood out is watching him in the red zone. There was a period where he had five straight touchdown passes in the red zone, including several over the middle of the field, which was a question mark for him coming out of college. He's really excelled in processing in that area. And I talked with Jayden Afford practice for a little bit and we joked about the one play in the preseason game he hit Diami Brown for that forty two yard pass deep.
He said, look, I checked.
Out of a screen pass, and when I got to the sidelines, the coaches were a little upset with me, but they were happy with the result. And when I talked to Dan Quinn after practice with me, had that wasn't what he was supposed to do, but it tells me that he is confident and comfortable with the scheme and when we get into the regular season, he is going to have the freedom to be able to check at the line of scrimmage. One other nugget that Jaden shared to me, he said he was excited to see the Dolphins blitzes. He get to see Todd Bowles in Tampa in Week one and so he wanted to see how he handled that in real speed. He said, they got me sometimes and I got them sometimes. It was good for him to be able to manage his reads his hots in that formation. And last thing, as we look to Saturday's preseason game, dan Quinn told me expect Jaden to play one to two series with the starters on Saturday. He said, he got a lot of reps in the joint practices, so they won't play him a ton, but they do want to see a little.
Bit more of the young quarterback before the regular season.
Okay, and we know that when teams have joint practices, it's usually because the coaches are buddies. These two, dan Quinn and Mike mcdanielge go way back, all the way really to nearly the start of Mike McDaniel's career.
Yeah, quite a special relationship between Dan Quinn and Mike McDaniel, and McDaniel was very transparent this week, saying that he didn't know if he would be here as a Dolphins head coach if he hadn't had the chance to be under Dan Quinn from twenty fifteen to twenty sixteen and Atlanta when Quinn was the head coach. And McDaniel has been very transparent about his sobriety journey. You know, he was dealing with alcohol abuse in that period, and he said dan Quinn was one of those guys who told him you can do it, you can manage through this process. And he just kept profusing how much he loved Dan as a man, as a leader. He talked about his culture, his ability to run a franchise, and Quinn as well just simply said all of us need teammates, and Mike did the work, but we were all there to support them. And there was a fun moment at the end of their little back and forth where Mike mideo learned that dan Quinn told him, Hey, I love him, and he said, can you tell dan Quinn through the Internet that I love him?
More so?
It's just kind of a special connection for these two guys who are trying to build their own franchise as dan Quinn getting a start to restart this Washington franchise and for the Dolphins, they're trying to end that twenty four year playoff drought. But we get to learn a little bit about their special personal connections in between.
Cam, thank you as I always look forward to chatting with you again next week. Coming up after this, we got Judy's favorite segment in the history of this show. We are going to give you the definitive of a perfect John Madden movie. And no, Nick Cage won't be involved. They'll still be good.
This just might be better.
That's next and Me Insiders presented by Harvard.
Free Josh Allen and the Bills starters will see about a quarter and a half of action.
On Saturday against the Steelers. This according to coach Sean McDermott. Of course, Pittsburgh also going to get its first look at their potential starting quarterback, Russell Wilson did not play in preseason Week one because of that calf injury. Now going to get his opportunity. And that's not all you're going to see this weekend on NFL Network. He got the Bengals against Caleb Williams and the Bears. You got the Lions against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. You got Cowboys Raiders Las Vegas, still trying to sort out their starting quarterback. And then on Sunday Night, the Packers going up against a Broncos TEENA for the first time. We'll have bo Nix in the starting lineup. Absolutely jam packed, do not move throughout the day on Saturday, a quadruple header right here on NFL Network, as well as that game on Sunday night. The what else is gonna get you in front of the TV? Probably a John Madden movie. Can I interest you in Nick Cage playing John Madden, because this apparently is a real thing that's going to happen. Nicholas Cage will be playing John Madden in an upcoming Madden biopic. As we walking you Back to the Insiders presented by Harbor Fright. This got us thinking earlier, well mainly got Judy thinking. But I played long about if we were casting the main handful of characters Judy in our own John Madden biopic, And here you go. You got Kenny Stabler you got Al Davis, you got Gene Upshawn. Of course, Pat Summer, all the longtime partner of John mad And as well as Madden himself. Judy, gimme your cast in the Judy Battista production of Madden the movie.
Okay, First of all, with all due respect to Nick Cage, who I'm sure will be fantastic, John c Riley should be John Matten. He looks like him. The late Philip Seymour Huffman would have been a choice too. Kenny Stabler, that should be Brad Pitt. It has to be somebody rakishly handsome, and that's bread Pitt.
Kurt some role.
I think Kurt Russell, who has gone gray, handsome, great gray hair and a great voice. That's Pat summerle Al Davis me has to be Al Pacino. I don't know if there's any other choice for Al Davis but Al Pacino and Gen Upshaw, who is one of my very very favorite people in all of the NFL.
Michael B.
Jordan for Gene Upshaw.
I had Pacino in there as Al Davis too, but then I was thinking, if we're casting this as young Al Davis, Steve Buscemi, maybe a little bit more age appropriate in that. How about Burt Kreischer as John Medden. I feel like you'd have to put a shirt on for the first time, but I feel like you could potentially make that. We're Good's got acbar in there? Who else can better play a Raiders defensive end?
Right?
All right, we'll see you on Monday.
During the weekend, everybody can see you.
