Good Morning Football.
Welcome into Good Morning Football, brought to you by your friend at Old Chapper Beef Turkey. It's a great Friday here in La. It's October eighteenth. I'm Surey Burris alongside at barge of Badjibamilla, Aan Titeo, our friends in New York, Peter Schrager and Kyle Brandt, because I can tell you here in La it's not really feeling like fall weather yet, but it's very much football weather in New York.
Yes, sure is.
And there's baseball last night, but there's football this weekend.
Saquan's coming to town.
And I'll tell you what.
In the Midwest, there's quite a matchup come in that we will see between the Lions and the Vikings as well.
There sure is earlier this week.
Vikings defensive cornator Brian Flores said he plans to fight fire with fire when it comes to facing the lions potent offense.
On Thursday.
Detroit offensive cornator Ben Johnson he had this to say.
Listen, this game has been.
Around for a long time, and we are challenges of coaching staff and I say it to the offensive staff quite a bit, is we can run a million different types of plays, and because of that, I don't like to run the same one twice. I don't like to do it within a game. I don't like to do it within a season. We certainly do have some staples that I will repeat at times, but we're charged with let's have a little creativity defenses. They're doing their film study, they're looking at things, they're finding, Hey, out of this formation, they're doing this, that and the other, and we try we try to mix it up. So from that regard, I'm not worried about putting things on tape if anything else is just going to help set up the next thing down the road.
And yeah, the well is deep.
The well is deep. So the battle for the King of the North in the NFC North that is here. It is a lot of triggeration we might see here, Peter, but ultimately what decides the outcome here?
Yeah, I think it's it's interesting because he's talking about how the whale is deep, and he's not scared that he showed a few plays on film, but the plays that he showed against the Dallas Cowboys has to be put into context. They were running double reverses in the fourth quarter up thirty points. They were throwing the ball to offensive linemen in the fourth quarter that are starters and probably shouldn't even be in the game anymore. While they're up thirty points, they were doing all this sorts of stuff.
Look at this, Look at this is too. That's to a big.
Offensive lineman right there, trying to get him his score because he didn't get it last year in the game.
Agains him now.
Initial thoughts were, Wow, they're really trying to show up the Dallas Cowboys, and that's fine.
I also think part of.
This was they know the Vikings are watching at home. We had Kevin O'Connell on the show yesterday and he said he was watching at home on his couch and was pretty amazed with the stuff that they were doing in this game. That's Ben Johnson. I don't want to underestimate defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn or Jared Goff or even head coach Dan Campbell, but I think this might be the Ben Johnson game.
It's going in to Minnesota.
A hostile environment, going up against Brian Flores, and this is a guy who's been approached for head coaching jobs the past two offseasons has rebuffed them because he wants to stay in Detroit and do the whole darn thing with these guys. Everyone's gonna be watching division rivals first place on the line. Let's see how deep that playbook goes, and let's see if they can keep this offense rolling. I think if Ben Johnson's offense can score and keep it rocking like they've been the last two games, there might be no defense in the league that stops them. If they get to thirty or forty, you better believe we're gonna be talking about the Lions and the Super Bowl favorites out of the NFC.
I'm on the high scoring game there too.
Peter, My goodness, it's just the energy to this game is It's just like you can feel it. You can't wait. I'm anticipating this. I think this game comes down to who's going to be able to establish the run. I mean, both teams have an amazing run defense, and I think what is gonna come down to both these teams. You look at the way they set up the play action. That play action is predicated on having a strong You've got to make sure that both sides have to make sure that they know that if you can't establish run that play action isn't open up because they're going to play back. When you look at it, you know, the Minnesota Vikings the top three defense, the Detroit Lions top three defense and run defense like it is going to be a throwdown. I can't wait to see how they game plan is, like the trigger ration all that. If you can't just get down to the basics, like the fundamental in conquering that, that's going to be a very difficult one.
But we'll see how this one turns out.
Well.
Listen, I don't know what the city of Detroit is known for as far as food, but one thing.
I know pizza, Yeah, scare pizza. One thing that they.
Are excellent at, and one thing that Ben Johnson and that Detroit Lions offense is excellent at is making some grilled cheese sallenges for the rest of the NFL. And I'll follow me on this one.
Okay.
Yeah, if you think of the three ingredients to a grilled cheese, it's bread, it's butter, yeah, and it's cheese. Rights Shregs pointed out earlier the week.
You know, do we think that.
Those fourth quarter trick plays were just to show off or was it a shot at all the plays that all the teams that they're about to play, specifically the Minnesota Bikings shrikes. It was specifically for the Minnesota Vikings. Ben understands that when every trick play that he runs, that defensive unit has to rep every single defense against that trick play. Whether it's cover one zone, it doesn't matter. Every defense that they have in their arsenal, they have to rep against those against those trick plays. Now, what does that do that forces defenses to worry about the cheese instead of the bread and butter. The bread and butter of the Detroit Lions is that run game with David Montgomery and Jamier Gals. It's that short term medium routes with a monter Saint Brown that he uses his yard to have the catch ability to create explosive plays. It's Jamison Williams flying down the side of the on the sideline and over the cross of the across the middle of the field to make those explosive plays. It's it's Sam Laporter coming alive in the red zone.
That is the bread and butter of the.
Detroit Lions offense. If you don't stop the bread and butter of the Detroit Lions offense, your toast literally and Ben Johnson and that offense.
So you guys like that one, U boys, I want some tomato soup. I like it.
Yeah, But Ben Johnson, that Detroit Lions offense is more than happy to sprinkle in some cheese in there to make you a nice little grilled cheese sandwich. So now that we're all hungry over here and there, my boys are hungry in New York.
KB, what you got? I mean, how do you follow that? That was perfect?
You landed it with the your toast because bread is I mean, man said, that's a fantastic take.
I also the.
Worst take is because they don't really think that the Lions were trying to embarrass the Cowboys, like they have no beef with the Cowboys.
They want to get the hell out of there.
If you want to see a team try to embarrass another team, watch Nick Sirianni and Saque on the Eagles this weekend.
Then you'll get that.
But I also think it's interesting that Peter, you were talking about the head coaches and the coordinators and like kind of almost upstaging each other. Do you know what a big deal you have to be to upstage Dan Campbell and Kevin O'Connell. These are not drinking violence. These are big, famous, cool, outgoing head coaches. But it does feel like a Coachella poster. So you're gonna go grilled cheese. And so Dan Campbell is like eighty two point font at the top on the main stage on day one. Kevin O'Connell's eighty point font. Here he's got an undefeated team. He looks like he might be the future next great coach. But then you look at that like side stage, maybe even in the dance tent tent, and it's this, it's Ben Johnson, it's Brian Flores, and you're like, you know, I like the headliners.
I've seen them several times. I heard that day that group in the dance tent goes hard.
I bet the DJs loud, and they're they're maybe the ones to see And it's fascinating that we're running coordinator stuff.
And I'm into it.
The Ben Johnson think Peter has any coordinator ever gotten a job as a.
Head coach mid season?
Like any has any cordners stopped this high. I know for years we would talk about Bien and me and Sala.
And all that.
I feel like he's gonna get hired away, like in Week nine. His stock is so high. I do think, though I don't want to, like just spoil this whole thing. The Lions lost their best defensive player, maybe their best overall player in Hutchinson. This thing has potential for bing bang, bing bang. I'm not sure the Vikings defense can stop the Lions offense. It's just they haven't been held under forty points in a month. I think in a month's time they've not scored fewer than forty. I don't know how well the Lions is gonna defense is gonna do against the Vikings. So like Jared Goff played in the pre ultimate shootout game of this generation in the LA Coliseum against Patrick Mahomes, this one may be pseudo sequel US Banks Stadium in Minnesota. I don't like the defenses in this game as much as I like Flores. I like the Lions offense a little bit more. But watch out for the dance tent. I'm telling you, it goes hard. People got pacifiers in their mouth and glow sticks and stuff.
It's crazy.
That's what we're gonna do. Oh man, that's gonna be a good man.
I think it's gonna be awesome.
I will say this, at some point in this game, there's gonna be a moment where Sam Donald's gonna have to make a big play. And we've already said that about Jared Goff since he's back to the Lions. And I think he showed us against Tampa Bay in the playoffs. He can lead them on a thing he showed us against the Rams and the playoffs.
You can do it. At some point.
Sam Donald, who shay you you beautifully said earlier, has never won five straight games in his career. At some point he's gonna have to make this drive and make the play and be the guy.
And if he does and.
They're six and oh like, maybe we have to stop saying at some point he has to because he could put that away and say I did it, guys, I did it. I think there are still a lot of skeptics around Donald. I might be one of them, just because I have a long body of work of us having great Sam Donald experience.
What's it gonna take. It's a good question. I don't know wanted to be like, I'm in on Donald. He is the I don't know, it might it might take till January. Honestly, I don't know.
And it's one step further awk War if you don't mind, it's once't further because JJ McCarthy's going to be coming back from this injury. Like this might be a one year deal for Sam, like where it's almost like Flacco last year in Cleveland, where it's like, well that was awesome, all right, but we have our quarterback. Sam's younger. Of course, he's twenty six years old, but like they just drafted a quarterback tenth overall. Yeah, so the Donald thinks fascinating, and I think we're all ready for that shot to drop, and maybe it just won't.
To me.
I think this is the game to me where I'm gonna really like just like like go all the way in because with Sam Donald, like you're going up against this team that has an amazing defense to run defense. If you can't get that running game going, Sam Donald is gonna have a lot of pressure on him to make things happen. I think the only way is Kevin O'Connell utilizing some of those outside screens something just to get the team going excuse me, horizontal so they can take some vertical shots. But both teams, it's just really scary to see. But this one will say more about Sam Donald, not only his arm talent, his ability to break down a great defense. I mean putting the game on his back. This is probably the biggest game he's played in his career. Just kind of going back, I hadn't done all the research, but just going back, like I can't remember Sam Donald five and oh going up against you know the four and what I can't remember this type of pressure. So he can handle the pressure and the attack that he's going to be under. I'm saying Sam Donald is the man.
Well, he's never done it.
This will be your first time having five plus consecutive wins. So this would be the game for Sam Donald to really stap Manti. To your point, sometimes people put mayo on their girl cheese to add.
That extra light.
Wait what not?
You've never heard that?
You feel like a little slather of mayo on there and then that at your recipe Maybe the defense, my point, give you that little extra something. Some all the talk on offense, all right, Jami's the mayo lover here, sorry and in my audience, welcome back.
To GMF be now the Steelers.
Hosting the Jets on Sunday night, and despite the team being foreign to Mike Tomlin deciding to make a change, let's hear from a maybe brewing quarterback battle of Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.
I mean, I don't think I played, you know, good enough, if I'm being ready with you now, if I'm being real, so I think if you know, I did play well enough, I don't think there would be you know, any sort of my language and not so at the end of the day, we got a few wins. Of course, I'm glad about that, but you know there's areas that you know, I could be better at, and you know, I'm just gonna continue to work on those and continue to get better.
More myself physically being on the run and all that stuff. So I feel good. It's been a great week so far, and we're just you know, we're just excited to play, you know, on Sunday night, obviously at home in front of our fans.
All right, there you have it here, we are going to do another round of mad minutes for another sixty seconds on the clock. We said, that's what fifteen seconds per per Okay.
Let's let's try to keep to that, all right.
The Steelers have a new QB one with Russell Wilson getting the nod. The Jets have a new receiver one Welcome to Jersey, Davante Adams, Kyle. How does this one play out?
It's unbelievable that somehow the Steelers are more interesting than the Jets in this game.
I don't know how that's possible.
But the Russell Wilson fields thing, which I still am not really clear who's starting the game. I don't think tom Win's clear either. It's a very unusual thing. And if he starts Russell Wilson, he doesn't play well and they lose this game.
What else?
But what I got it's that he's been getting first team reps. But right Alma has not announced anything.
Official hijints or something. What is this?
I think they're gonna go to Russell because why would you even bother splitting reps? But like the fact, we don't know, and they're a four and two team, not a two and four team. Yeah, it's playing with fire, But I trust Mike Tomlin in these situations you're.
Playing with fire, gasoline, all of that, because if you do start Russell Wilson, he doesn't do what he's just You're gonna go back to fields like stick with fields like I'm not the coach, but please just stick with the man.
You're foreign two with him.
Stick with the guy.
Okay, I have ten seconds left. I don't know what the math was on that. But what about Davante Adams? I mean, like the Russell Wilson, Yeah, that's cool, but DeVante Adams is going to be potential on this field in ballin.
Oh when you look at it, DeVante Adams no longer with the Raiders, to your point, are moving on to our next game. They played the Rams. Both teams have had a disappointing you could say start to the season, Peter, can you give us a bright spot in this matchup?
I can't. I can't.
And in fact, if anything, this is like a loser leaves town game and it's gonna be in La right in your backyard where there's gonna be a lot of Raiders fans in town. This to me is one of those deals where it's like Cooper Cup, are you healthy? Are you gonna play Matthew Stafford, do you want to throw this team on your back and go on the front. The Rams are three the Rams for three and six last year and still made the playoffs, so they don't want to hear this talk. But one in five seems like an insurmountable hole.
I'll give you a spot, a very Brice pot, sure, Kyn Williams. Kian Williams is a price spot, obviously, Indy, let's go like keep dominating in the ring game, Kurrent.
I'll give you that Brice spot, all right.
And I think another bright spot might be the idea of Cooper Cup. Cooper Cup maybe potentially, you know what I mean, Like if we see him in there and then you know, looking for the bright side for the Raiders. They're coming to La. This is, you know, also a Raiders nation town over here maybe so far is full of Raiders fans. I mean, we know how they take over at a legiant stadium.
The internet's obsessed with the Raiders trading Max Crosby just because the Lions need a pass rusher.
I don't know if it's gonna happen. I haven't heard anything that's gonna happen.
They're still their best player, but I'll be fascinating to watch him this weekend. This is not a great game, but it's interesting to see some of the bigger names with the hell they have to provide.
I was gonna mention that Kyle, the fact that Max Crosby is sort of seemingly opening the door that he might want to trade. But we're gonna have to dig into that a little bit more. Switching to the AFC North showdown in Cleveland, Joe Burrow versus Deshaun Watson Mantai. When you look at this one, what is your first point?
The same thing that Cleveland is trying to figure out is when is Nick Chubb coming back because we need them?
And how much time you're going to how many more.
Chances are you going to give the show man's That's really the two thing that's on my mind, and I know it's on the mind of all the Cleveland Browns fans.
Yeah, and both these teams are struggling. Let's keep it real. I mean, like like I want to see something. I mean, I gotta see something. Can the Bengals Can they come out and win two games in a row? You know you talked about DeShawn DeShawn Watson, like this is it? Like now, this is really going to put the pressure on the on management to see what they're going to do with their expensive quarterback.
Free Jamis. Free them.
If they do that and they make a switch at halftime or any time, the whole NFL landscape's going to irrupt.
It's gonna be all on red zone all the game breaks. Jamis Winston is in the game.
Do you know how bad things have to be for the answer to steady the ship is Jamis Winston, who is a great, you know player in some ways, but heavily faulted Peter And yet.
Why not go to Jamis?
Let's do it.
Lou Anna Rumo's defense had given up seventy five points or more and ten points or more.
In seventy five straight games.
That would have been a lot it feels like, and uh, ten points are more in seventy five straight games.
They held the Giants to seven.
If the Bengals defense is awoken, who knows Joe Burrow's done a lot less, a lot more with a lot less. I think this could still be a season that can be salvaged in Cincinnati.
Also want to give a shout out to Rodney McCloud on defense. I believe he leads the team in touchdowns now with the trade of Amari Cooper. So I see there, Rodney. Let's go to the Nation's capital. Commander's back at home. After that tough loss to the Ravens the Battle of the beltwagh, they're playing host to the Panthers, akbar, what are you expecting as these two get together.
To be quite honest with you, I just want to see Jay and Daniels put up big numbers and have them bounce back after that loss to the Baltimore Ravens. That's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a perfect game, one hundred percent. He's been so close to it. I want to see him do that, all that stuff, all the SAT numbers.
When do we get Bryce Young back, I'll just throw it out there. We get a little break.
The idea was to sit him down, watch and learn Andy Dalton had a good win, and then it's just not happening. Are we just treading water with Andy Dalton? Shouldn't we get Bryce Young back? Eventually? My Panthers buck my dollar. I'm spending on the Panthers of my time. I would like to get Bryce Young in return.
I'm ready.
I'm looking at the offensive minds in this one because it's one of those deals where it's like what year is the hot name? So Dave Canalis was the hot name last year. What Dave Canalis's team is one in five in Starland offense? Kingsbury did an interview with Carolina. David Temper didn't bring kings very and now Cliff Kingsbury is the hot name in Washington. Let's see which offensive whiz kid can get it going. But right now I'd lean towards Kingsbury's because their offense has been unstoppable.
Yeah, this is going to say a lot about the commanders that team and their mentality and if they're ready to win.
If you can beat the teams that you're supposed to beat, this is.
Going to say a lot about that commander's organization.
All right, let's say to the marquee matchup Chiefs Niners Super Bowl rebook as we've been talking about all morning. As you said it, Peter, we really don't need to say much more. But again, tell us what is going to be the one thing you're watching for.
I want to see how this Niners team performs under pressure. We've talked about it, but what if they get a lead late in this game? What if they're up in the fourth quarter? Are they not going to put the Chiefs away? You know, they haven't beaten the Chiefs since twenty fourteen. They don't beat Andy Reid. Kyle Shanahan never has beaten Andy Reid. And the story has gone two different Super Bowls. Ten point leading in the fourth quarter and they've given it up their home. They're healthier Niners. If you're in the lead here, do you find a way to put one away against the Chiefs.
Isaac Grendo Isaac Gorendo is apparently allegedly going to be the starting running back for the forty nine ers. I think I was disrespectful to him earlier because want to see McCaffrey. I don't want to see Isaac Grendo, but I will and I will root for him.
Guys, go get it.
Yeah, I know I'm looking at this This Chief's defense. That's that's the really, that's the star for me. That's that's been their star last year to carry them through into the playoffs. That's been the unit that's carried them so far this year. So I'm looking at that Kennis City Chiefs defense.
We'll see how this forty nine Ers team takes, you know, takes all these injuries and is Deebo and Jennings.
We'll see how they respond to that.
And we already saw Kyle Shanahan said that that film take given him a little bit of the PTSD thinking back, see how this rematch pins out. Great work, guys, I think I think we made most of the buzzers.
On that one. That was much better. Good job everybody, all right, but at job head to break. Here we goes.
We're going to take a short look back at Super Bowl.
Fifty eight, thirteen seconds to go, twenty two to nineteen Shan Flint Cisco A touchdown wins the game.
All right, So I got such right bunch, f Shuttle, Tom.
And Jerry right yellow, Let's go, pimono play action, fake right side draw, touchdown.
Chusas City down.
To back Super Bowl champion the Kansas City Chiefs.
Back to back, Baby at another set back. Hey, we're not done, dog, I want three.
I want back for back to back.
GMMB Fantasy Advice presented by FedEx showing us now is fantasy expert Adam Rank. You never know how he's gonna show up, what he's gonna be doing, what he's gonna be wearing.
Rank, Good morning, are you there? Hello? Oh, hello there, Kyle. Good to see you again.
And to everybody out there in fantasy land who probably didn't get the fantasy point production that you expected last.
Night from that contest. Who watched it? Did you watch that?
Watched it? Yeah?
The greatest game of the year, of course, yeah, you mean this morning on the condemn him.
Maybe he's going to school us on Isaac Grindo.
But in the meantime you mentioned last night, mister Rank, Seas Payton returned to the Super Dome Bronco's beating the Saints Thursday Night football. What players caught your eyes? Let's look backwards in fantasy Haydon.
Revenge game, ladies and gentlemen, But it was the defense that stood out. I think that you know something's going on when you look at your league's scoring and it's zero zero zero zeros. Like nobody started anybody from this contest except for the four souls that started Alvin Kamara, and of course, the Broncos defense carried the day, scoring a ton of points. Anytime you get an opportunity to go up against Spencer Rattler, you got to go out there and take that opportunity and start the.
Defense right eyes forward, this time forward, week seven.
But I'm gotta thay one thing about Javonte Williams too, because like they were, Sean Payton, you think that I'm a man of whimsy and you can't trust me, Sean or yes, Sean Payton goes, oh, we're gonna have Audrica Stemi play and he gets one carry and you're like, oh, it's on, it's on, And then here comes Javonte Williams with two tons. Thanks Sean, thanks for having me leave him on the bench for that.
He didn't lie, he did, he did not lie.
Yeah, golden tickets, you have a few which a quarterback that they get awarded a golden ticket.
We haven't brought you a treat this morning.
I'm gonna say, Drake May over there in London, I think is a pretty good opportunity if you're if you're hurting at the quarterback position, if you have to stream somebody, if you have Caleb Williams, or if you're starting Dak Prescott and you're looking at the waiver wire. Drake May brought some added juice to this Patriots lineup last week three touchdown passes, the first rookie in NFL history to throw for rookie quarterback quarterback could have been a linebacker.
I don't know. First rookie quarterback.
To throw for three touchdowns and also lead his team in rushing. Drake May going up against the Jacksonville.
Jaguars and we're gonna be watching.
That's early in the morning there on the West Coast. The quarterback position has been inconsistent, mister Wonka, but you're riding the hot hand this week. Who you got as far as the QB outside of Drake May in London.
I'm gonna go with.
Kirk Cousins is a quarterback that I love this week, and what we've seen over the past couple of weeks is that Kirk Cousins is really starting to lean into this offense.
There is some question.
About whether they're going to be able to run the foot, that they run the football too much, or anything like that. We saw last week where Tyler Algier and Jon Robinson both went out there and ran a ton. But Kirk Cousins is another guy that we can believe Willy Wonka.
I know a lot of Andrews this year, Willy Wonka.
Theres a lot in is specifically at the wide receiver position. You have one receiver this week that you're like, who is it?
Tank Dell Love Tankdal this week? Last week, everybody was a little apprehensive. Not me, but everybody else was a little apprehensive about Tankdal. He had really not looked like himself over the first couple of weeks of the season, and of course, playing behind Nico Collins and Stefan Diggs, he's not going to get a lot of opportunity. But last week he had a thirty percent target share in that game, and I expect that number to increase this week against the Green Bay Packers. The strength of the Green Bay Packers defense is against the run, so they're going to have to throw the ball against this Packers team to get into the end zone.
All right, Well we got to go here because this is a position that everyone's concerned about. Do you have those on her chocolate nugget at the tight end position? I mean, I want somebody you know that that really is going to have us chilling up there.
It is shot.
We get that in slow motions.
By the way, No, that was real too. Try to upstain here's.
Me Akbar I get up early in the morning in a top hat and you're trying to you're trying to upstage me.
There.
I'm gonna go with one of your buddies, David and Djoku, who has a huge opportunity this week. And thanks thankfully David and Joku.
Not no, thanks to you.
We squashed the beef, so we are no longer quarreling or anything like that. I love this play against the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously, with Amari Cooper being traded to the Buffalo Bills, that's going to open up some targets in this offense. And when you look at the matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, they've allowed an average of twelve fantasy points per game to tight ends this season. That would put them in the top ten in that defensive category of fantasy points.
Again, I appreciate that. That's my Nigerian buddy man.
I appreciate Yeah, I remember you know what. I appreciated you calling it. No, you didn't do that. You never thought the stick up for rank just once you're like, hey, David, when you called out, my boy, Rank, Please don't do that. No, nothing, You're as quiet as a church mouse.
Nothing. And then it was anybody missed it last year?
David and Joku passionately called out Adam Rank by name. It was really combat him. He was not joking. And I'm sure Rank, you spit out whatever you were drinking?
Did I was?
I uh? And everybody thought that that was planned. They're like, was that planning?
Like?
Yeah, of course, I'm just having to drink the water. Like, oh, David and Joku, spit take the cats?
Sorry?
Did we get that in?
All right? Do we have a recap? Let's get a recap. Recap, but all because a lot of players.
That we want to go with.
I skipped over Chase Brown.
I was looking at the requests what do you got? I want you at Beetlejuice next week? Right, the one from Howard Stern. You know not Howard Stern.
I wanted to make thinking up some cover band on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. Requests, Oh hey, do a little beetlejuice for us.
A lot goes into this to be the.
Tin man.
I get to beat.
All right, that's the Rank. You're the best. Thank you for commitment, Adam rank
