GMFB Wednesday Hour 2: Top RB's in NFL, Chicago Bears! J.J. McCarthy injury

Published Aug 14, 2024, 6:30 PM

Hour Two of the Good Morning Football Podcast begins with hosts Jamie Erdahl, Kyle Brandt, Peter Schrager, and Akbar Gbajabiamila reacting to Maurice Jones-Drew’s list of the top-32 running backs in the NFL - could a RB win MVP this year? Then they react to the second episode of Hard Knocks and answer questions about the Chicago Bears. Later, Indianapolis Vice Chair/Owner Kalen Jackson and cornerback Kenny Moore join the breakfast table and they touch on Anthony Richardson’s preseason debut, the budding rivalry with the Houston Texans, and their KICKING THE STIGMA initiative.

Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.

Good Morning Football.

Hey, everybody, this is Good Morning Football, presented by Harbor Freight lives here in Los Angeles at the home of NFL Network.

I'm Jamie ert All.

This is akbar Bosby and Mila there, Peter Schrager, there is Kyle Brandt. Some people may say that come August fourteenth of the preseason, you might hit a bit of a training campbell. We might be running out of things to talk about. But never is there a better solution than somebody putting out a top thirty two list of a position in the NFL to solve all of our woes. To start the second hour of our show, we want to thank Maurice Jones Drew for doing God's work here.

At the lead block. Mjd all right, MVD. He is a fantasy football aficionado.

If one would call the twenty eleven Rushing Later that he ranked the best thirty two RB ones heading into the season. I can only think of RB's when I say RB one's. Here's just top ten, though, Christian McCaffrey, Derrick, Henry Breese Hall, and so on and so forth all the way down to Josh Jacobs in a Green Bay Packers uniform. Guys, Kyle, what do you make of this list? Who is not in the top ten? Who is unceremoniously left out? Are you offended by number thirty two? Where do you take us first?

No? No, I got it.

I respect An MJD's perspective completely. I don't want to like nitpick with his taste. I just think it's interesting when some of the things shook out. I know a lot of people looking at this list will be like Kyrin Williams as the number four running back in the league, and MJD definitely has a lot of rams bias, which he openly admits. He was also Kyraen Williams third in the league in rushing last year. He's good, He's going to be used a lot. I wouldn't have him at a four personally, but I don't think it's crazy. Saquan at five, we'll see Saquon I think was hovering around the top three. Five is still I think, based a lot on reputation what he does when he's healthy. I think there's some interesting people like Alvin Kamara is at thirteen. Alvin Kamara is just I feel like twenty minutes ago was a massive superstar who would be way way up there, and it is down at thirteen. But I want to talk specifically about two people. Jonathan Taylor at nine. A couple of years ago, Jonathan Taylor was one. He was better than McCaffrey. He was better than Derrick Henry.

He was one. He was the best running back in the NFL.

We're at a place with Jonathan Taylor where in this season he had three hundred and thirty two carries a couple of years ago, and then he's missed thirteen games since it hasn't had the burst, and I harken back to twenty years ago. We need to have people like Larry Johnson on the Chiefs who would have four hundred touches in a season and the wheels would come off. And I hate that and I don't want that. That has to happen for Jonathan Taylor. Great player, great personality. Everybody says he's healthy in camp and we're going to get the old Jonathan Taylor. I've heard that many times about guys, the old ones back.

I hope it's true.

But I also think the most interesting omission by far. MJD nowhere in his top thirty two has Jalen Warren on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I have a huge beef with that because if you watched the Steelers a lot last year, One, he was the.

Best running back on their team.

Two, no one ran harder than him in the NFL last year.

He was fantastic. He does everything, He catched.

He blocks, he does everything that MJD respects in an all rounded back. But Jalen Warren had crazy, burst, aggression, anger, you name it, and I feel in a lot of ways for big stretches, carried that offense that was not very good and still was in the playoffs. Jalen Warren I think should be way up. So MJD isn't even have on the list. I love number thirty for the Steelers, but a fascinating list by MJD. Kyle.

I want to carry the workload similar to what Jalen Warren and Naji Harris have to do in Pittsburgh with you about this answer, because last night when the list came out and I was inspecting it, Naji Harris at seventeen, my first thought was I'd be pissed if I was Nagie Harris, I think he's better than seventeen. I also think that Jalen Warren deserves to be in the top thirty two. And the fact that those two running backs I think are misplaced on this list is offensive to what the Steelers are going to try to accomplish, especially considering the two quarterbacks that they brought in. No matter who it is between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. But knowing Naji Harris's personality a little bit that we do, I think he sees stuff like this. I think he gets mad about stuff like this. I think he's probably already ticked off that the team didn't pick up his fifth year option.

I was shocked he was at seventeen.

I don't think he's the seventeenth best running back in the league.

So the fact I didn't even.

Dawn on me, I would have assumed Jalen Moore was on that list.

I was more.

Focused about Naji Harris. But Kyle, you know Naji as well. Don't you think this is the kind of thing that would get under his skin.

I don't know.

He's eccentric and he's unusual. He may laugh at it, he may get mad by it. If you do get mad, I would say to Naji, break more long runs, like it's he knows that it was not a great statistical year for him last year, and he wins the anger runs and sceptors because he runs some guys over. But it's like the yards per carry is low. The burst was low for a while, and if you watch the Steelers week in week out, number thirty would come in as the change of pace guy, and he had more bursts. So if Nagi is motivated, I hope so, and he should do something about it.

This is just one man's opinion, but I would say this, he's a rushing leader. He was one of the best of his era, and like you want to poke holes in Laurice Jones Drew's list, fine, but do not poke holes.

In a vantage point. He's one of the great running backs of.

His generation and this is how he sees it. I look at that number eight Vjon Robinson, and I can't imagine he's not going to be in that top three this year.

I spoke with he's a new.

Offensive coordinator, Zach Robinson over the offseason for my podcast, and he's like, dude, Jon does it all he could be wide receiver.

He could be running back. Talking about him in the way that.

Coaches talk about Christian McCaffrey. The Bijon stuff. We just were scratching the surface last year and he had about ten incredible highlight plays. Remember, top player out of Texas, a top ten pick in the draft, and an individual that everyone universally was like, you don't draft running backs in the top ten. And then it was like, oh, except if it's Jon Robinson. That catch right there, Like that is unkenny athletic ability.

What he could do the legacy of his rookie year was that they didn't use him, Like why aren't Bijon getting the ball more?

And they'd scream it all year, and I think they were right.

They were to give them the ball of Tyler Algier, who's still there, and they're they're trying other things at Cardary Patterson, but like, let's just go to Bjon Robinson. And I think Zach Robinson, the new offensive coordinator, is going to do that.

So that's my take.

I think Vjon ends up this this like if you're talking about like who on this list is gonna have the biggest jump, But I think it's Vjon. But then there's a player who came in at number eighteen on.

This list that no one anywhere is talking about.

But I've got some sources in that building and they're like.

This is our dude, Kenneth Walker. OK, let's go for the Seahawks.

I think is going to be a workhorse in this grub offense.

And here's the interesting connection.

You know, Kenni Walker his best game as a college player ever was when he was at Michigan State and he tore up the Michigan Wolverines. Tore him up for like two hundred yards beat Michigan. He was an absolute mom during that game. The new head coach in the NFL for Kenneth Walker is Mike McDonald Do you know who the defensive coordinator for Michigan that day.

Was Mike McDonald It was Mike mcdonaldson.

He was working for Harbaugh and watched Kenneth Walker just absolutely terrorize that Blue defense.

All day long.

I think Kenneth Walker, if you look at this offense last year, now, they have Sharboney, they have other guys, and I know in the preseason debut, we didn't see a lot of Kenneth Walker. We saw Sharbonay instead, like I wouldn't be shocked if Kenneth Walker's one of those top five guys.

I love this position.

I love when it comes to fantasy football, this position because I think it's the.

Greatest variable year to year to year.

So if I'm going to take my shot, I'm going with Bijon Robinson and I'm going with Kenneth Walker, two guys who are on MJD's list, but I don't think are going to be anywhere near where.

They ended up on the list by the end of the season.

You know, I will go to the number two spot, which I thought was very interesting. I respect MJD. I absolutely love that he still has the respect for Derrick Henry.

You know, you guys heard me.

Talk about the fact that I feel like he is Shaquille O'Neill to Kobe Bryant, which is Lamar Jackson. I still believe in this combination, and I think we're going to get the Los Angeles Lakers Shaquille O'Neil, meaning that Derrick Henry has a lot left in him when we look at the production he's put out. You know, he mentioned something in this where he talked about in the last five seasons, the Raven's leading rusher has been a quarterback. And so the fact that you now have a bona fide runner like a Derrick Henry, the combination of these two guys is going to be explosive. I'm telling you that AFC North is going to be the UFC North. There are going to be some fine dogs in that division.

It is fun to say a name and put a number next to it and be like.

The audacity, Peter, the audacity.

Of Isaiah Pacheco having the number twenty next to him.

Ooh, another one.

I mean, Jamie, you could pick your guy and like in my case, like I look at Pachaco and I'm like, he could have a huge season this year and then get his third Super Bowl ring. Are we really ranking him in the top at the bottom of the top twenty? No, Like Potato's that dude.

He is that dude.

The other one just considering the potential injury to Tyrone Treesy with the Giants yesterday. The fact that Devin motal Motor Singletary is thirty two on the list, I mean, it's.

A great list, MJD.

And this is why we appreciate you because it gives us the topic du jour for the second hour of Good Morning Football. Christian McCaffrey finished third in MVB poting MVP voting last season, and we haven't had a running back as an MVP since twenty twelve version of Adrian Peterson.

M that was a good year.

Realistically, could a running back get the award this year?

Kyle, It's gonna be hard. It's gonna be really hard.

The Adrian Peterson not only did he have the ridiculous production that year, like he had the coming off the ACL like the story was there.

It was just all perfect.

And you point to so many prolific running back seasons we've seen since then and nothing. McCaffrey las next year, and even McCaffrey won one thousand and a thousand with Carolina, And it's just it's always quarterbacks.

I've said this before.

For it to be an MVP running back, I think two thousand yards starts the conversation. You have to give them that number to toss them that. You have to be probably on the best team.

In the NFL. You have to do so many things, and.

Then also you have to have like a kind of a down year for quarterbacks. There's just too many things I want to double back on MJD's list. Is there a case to be made for anybody? Peter got me going. We start talking about Beijon. Like, if you're a fantasy player and you got the number one pick in your lottery, is there someone that you would take instead of McCaffrey.

And I'll tell you why.

The reason you win fantasy leagues is getting a guy the year he blows up, not the year after, not two years after. McCaffrey was wildly productive last year, a huge workload. It's difficult to stack seasons back to back like that, avoiding injuries, all that stuff. If you are feeling crazy and your number one pick in the draft, you stand up there in front of your friends and grab the Breis Hall sticker or the Bijon sticker?

Would you do it?

Peter?

Are you just gonna go because it's different?

Like last year I took Saquon first overall in my fantasy draft and everyone fell off their chair and it didn't work out, But it was like I thought Saquon was gonna have a big year. Look fantasy football, to me, it's like always to me, it's you can look at all these wonks who do the numbers and they try their snap counts in preseason.

Or you can say, like who do I want to root for? And who do I want to say?

And who do I in my gut feel like it's gonna have a big year. To me, I think Bijon is more than worthy to go one to one in the fantasy draft, even above Christian McCaffrey this year. And you know what, it's probably more fun to root for that. And then it's the stock pick.

Hey, you know what, let me triple down on that, because Bjon Robinson is the running back who I think has probably the best chance to win MVP. And I think everybody knows that. In order for a running back, and it's it's a long shot, but in order for a running back to win, you know, he's got to have a nice offensive line, and he has to have a quarterback that is not going to threaten being an MVP candidate. And so I love Kirk Cousins. I think he's a dynamite quarterback. But I think that's the recipe. You look at Adrian Peterson, who was this quarterback back then uh lakwan, do we who's Adrian Peterson's quarterback, Christian Ponders Christian Ponder right on Peter.

Varis Jackson. I don't know that's a cool shirt though.

You think before then it was La Damian Thomason. Then I think it was back in six it was Philip Rivers so and Philip Rivers wasn't Philip Rivers yet. So I think Jon has probably the best opportunity to win that MVP.

I'm actually rooting for him. I like the kid.

You don't think.

Kirk Cousins could offend an MVP candidacy for b John Robinson whatsoever. The way he can throw the ball and the way you expected.

To do and I don't.

I don't think.

I think too many people like they do the name brand stuff. Right, you can buy the same belt from Target. That's nice. Then you can go get one that's from Gucci. The Target one's probably better, right, But no one's going to give him that respect. I don't think kirk Cousin has the same type of respect from folks out there, so they probably wouldn't put him in the MVP candidate. But I think he's an amazing quarterback.

Well, I just consider the way the offense is going to run in Atlanta, and I just Bejon's really good. I just don't you have Kirk Cousins, Like, why would you hand the ball off every other time to bolster a Bijon.

MVP candidate campaign? If you will? I'm it's a trigger word right now. I don't even want to say the words.

That's a good point.

That's no, no, no, that's the misnomer. You don't need just handoffs like That's the thing I think while McCaffrey was so electric is because they got the wide receiver stuff in with them.

I think if they.

Use Bijon that way, it won't take away from kirk cousins past attempts. It's just that he'll become that Marshall falwk type or he'll become you know what they did with of course Alvin Kamara a few years ago, where it's like you're gonna get a hundred catches, also like we're going to still give you that.

To me, if.

McCaffrey is going to do it, it's going to take a herculean effort. A thousand yards receiving thousand yards running one hundred catches, Like we have put the bar so high for these running backs, and even then if he.

Does all that, they still might give the MVP to party.

So to your point, Jamie, it's really difficult for running back.

And I would just.

Say, I want to talk to the kids out there. If you get the number one pick, probably just take McCaffrey.

I think I got a little bit.

Don't care because fun.

I'm reminded that there was like a five year run where Ladanian was the number one pick and he always.

Produce unless you took Priest Holmes, and you felt great because you were the wan who took Priest Holmes.

I know, but listen, don't do anything crazy. We get worked up a little bit here and Peter gets emotional. Peter just said he picked Saquon last week. They do all right, you should probably go with McCaffrey first.

Overall, he lives in a New York No good, that'll do it, Hey, we too of the preseason kicks off right here on our home on NFL Networks tomorrow night.

It's happening.

You're going to get another glimpse of rookie quarterback Drake May for New England. They're taking on the Eagles tomorrow at seven pm Eastern. It's one of six live games we actually have this week on the network. The Vikings are going to be without their rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy for the foreseeable future. That was news that came out of camp yesterday. Didn't see it coming. How do the Vikings move forward without him?

We're going to talk about it later on the show.

Do you have Bears fatigue already?

I'll ask the question.

It's a lot of Bears talk since the draft. They have an HBO show, we talk about them a lot. Any other place talks about them a lot.

They haven't even played a game yet. They want for weeks.

Are you over it? Are you like hell No, I've waited for this season.

We'll get into it.

Answer the question, Kyle, are you over it?

I'll no, not at all.

I'm not either smoking them into it? What is this group stretcher? There's always a little power just partner stretcher.

It's much migrating to partners partner chefs.

Okay, I want to tell you what I was watching Emily put on the show last night, the show Love Island.

Don't shut up, oh man, it's just unbelievable.

Bro Payne and I watched Love Island.

Like religious religiously, not religiously, But that is not cringe show.

I've ever a lot so good. Which one are you watching? The USA or the New whatever? The most recent season is. There's the US, same one and there's a bridge. I mean it's cringey.

I mean they just bring in h random people the bombshells.

Yeah, come on, bro, I know.

You're part of these enjoying it.

Bro. I was it's like watching a car wreck, like you're like, I got a look away exactly watch it.

I literally said the same thing.

But you can get hooked, man, because then you're like, what's Rob and Leo's deal?

That was from Hard Knocks last night.

Guys, I gotta tell you Austin read his face when Cole Comet starts to bait hit with Love Island.

How stressed is the rookie quarterback?

Because this is one of those things where someone's like, hey, you know how much I love Love Island. You're like, no, I'm obsessed with it. We watched religiously, like seriously, I was just joking, what is wrong with you?

Man?

I think he was like like kind of tiptoeing, like do you really love it? It's like do you watch the US testing him. I really felt for the rookie quarterback there because like, I get it, man, like you don't want to admit that you wake up and read People magazine every morning like it's fine.

Oh.

I Like on shows like that, there's always like there's one person who's like the veteran. In this case, it was Austin read ironically, who's a rookie and then new to the show as Cole Comet, and the veteran has always has this energy of like, oh, just wait, just wait until he gets this, like when you're watching squid games or Tiger King one of those things, and that person's like the like the the leader that gets you through it. That was a really sweet, relatable moment. We've always felt that way about a TV show, Peter, what do you blow deck?

That's your thing?

I love that below deck? You know what's that?

It's like Mediterranean cruise does that the staff are just sleeping with the people on the ship.

Great, it sounds awesome.

Just wait, just.

Wait, it's five. It gets really all of a sudden.

You're like, is that the shrager who's out in the Hampton's I know.

Let me tell you this. Let me tell you this.

That kid right there, that Austin Reid, he has been a star on Hard Knocks through two weeks.

He had a.

Great charming moment as they where Sean McDermott through a challenge flag on a fourth down play that Austin and they show read like Sean McDermott's gonna throw a challenge flag.

He's like, but what are you doing? And like, look, I don't know if.

Boston Red is making the team.

Sean mcdermot's a made man in the league, and like, I just love that this kid has got a personality and we might we might not see me in the NFL for years and years and years, But through two episodes, he's been a stud on this show.

Yeah. I like his parents' support too. That's been pretty cool.

Just yep.

He saw Roman Dunze perform his rookie Talent show song.

What is it he did?

He did?

Once the team commits, it's very helpful. I was worried there for just a second. How does it make us all feel about the Bears right now?

Kyle?

I mean, we always feel great about the Hard Knocks team. They're gonna win every game. They look so good. The slow motion sprinklers and all that. I alluded to this in the last segment that you know. I've talked a lot about the Bears over the last couple of weeks, and I get messages chirping about enough with the Bears, enough with the Bears. I love if people are getting sick of the Bears. I love it because if you're getting sick of a team, they're doing something right.

There's a lot of people sick of the Chiefs. There's a lot of people sick of the Patriots for years.

I want you to be sick of a team because we're showing them.

And believe me, if they.

Start winning with this team and they come out too and one and they win that Week two nationally televised game against the Texans, you think you're sick of them. Now it's going to be Bears twenty four to seven. I'm sorry to tell you. There goes DJ Moore through the night. I think they look great loose. We'll see the head coach has never accomplished much, the quarterback's never done anything. But I like that people are sick of them, stay sick.

I like it.

Hey, I will add this the highest rated premiere in the last five years. Was last this week's Hard Knocks premiere of the Chicago Bears on Hard Knocks, so people are watching the Bears, fans are activated, and the first episode, if I give you my honest review, was like a lot of character building. We're gonna get to know Maddieberflus, Well, we know Maddieberflut. We're gonna get to know Caleb Williams, we know Cablebs. The episode that happened last night, which I watched, it's football, like Jalen Johnson and Keenan Allen are going out at it on the sidelines.

It's great.

You've got Wheeler the running back trying to make the team and Chad Moore in the running backs coaches chewing him out like there was actual football in Caleb. He's the biggest show in town. The guy is awesome and there's a great humanity in him. So far that we've seen thirsty two episodes where he's not this cocky know it all, like he's hanging with Brett Rippon, Austin Reid and Tyson Bagent and he's just one of the guys.

Yeah, I'm really growing to like Caleb through the show.

I mean, you guys know how much of a fan I am of the Los Angeles Lakers. And ironically, this comparison happens on my favorite basketball player's birthday, Magic Johnson. Shout out to Magic Johnson, Happy Birthday. But Caleb Williams reminds me a lot of the impact that Magic Johnson had coming to LA. There was an excitement, there was a smile that he has that lit up a city from Los Angeles to Bangor Maine. And I think Caleb has that same thing. Whenever you see him he's smiling, there's this relax this ease to him, this comfort, and I'm like, Kyler to your point, man, I am really feeling like I'm like, I'm like falling in love with the Chicago Bears.

And I've never been a Bears fan ever.

The only person I ever liked from the Chicago Bears was Refrigerator Perry, and that's because he had refrigerator in front.

Of his name. That was it.

And now all of a sudden, I'm like, I'm into it. So and then shout out to to Chad more than Ian Wheeler. I love that kind of like the dog days of two a days and you have a coach. And my dad used to say this, if your coach isn't on you and screaming at you, then that it means they don't That means they don't care, right, And if they're on you, they care. So I think this kid might end up making the team coach.

Scream with the love language.

How far you didn't like Brian Erlacker, Devin Hester, Jake Cutler, we could go you didn't like any of those guys over the years on the Bears.

I did like Devin Hester. I did like brian Erlaker, but you have to remember with Ermaker, I was competing, so it was a difference, you know what I mean. Devin Hester I grew to appreciate, but going back earlier, like it was a refrigerator parent.

That's my favorite Chicago. That's it. That's all I have for you. I'm sorry.

I like just the ten second we had insight into the meeting room where because we always hear about this after the fact, especially if things don't go well for rookie quarterback like man, the attention to detail just wasn't there, Like, oh, we wasn't We're seeing all those little insights into kileb Williams when they were having a meeting room talking about the officiating cruise, and Caleb Williams goes, yes, well, how often am I going to see these guys? And they're giving him a bio Craig Rohlsat, who knew an athletic director or at a prep school in Seattle. I had no idea, but like, this is the kind of stuff.

You care about.

There's seventeen crews and you can see him listening and calculating this information and like, oh, it's.

The hard knocks cars. I'm drunk on it.

Yeah.

You know what's interesting about that because I never I used to always figure out, like, how did the quarterbacks know all these officials? I never knew any of the officials. Only knew Ed Hockeley and Mike Carrey.

That was it.

But the other guys that never knew, So that was cool that they were giving him a breakdown like that.

Yeah, if you didn't see it, here's the scene as Jamie was detailing. It's a guy named Harry Freed. Do you know who Harry Freed is. That's Jared Freed, our old friend of the show. That's his little brother and his job is to help prep Caleb Williams on who the different officials are, so that you can have a relationship.

With these guys.

And like Jamie said, he's talking about how.

Craig Rohlstad, one of the great officials of.

The league, is actually an ad or an administrator at a prep school and up in Washington State. But Harry Freed, Jared Fried's little brother, a little friend of the show.

Actually, I think Jared.

Freed was once on the program dressed as a taco or something like that. I just the best. The best I can contribute is the little inside information. There's a guy who works for the Bears, has been with him for years as a friend of mine, and I text him about a week ago and I go, give me the real deal, like, how's it looking out there? Tell me how this team is. He says, Caleb's coming along. Defense is ridiculous, and I go, well, that sounds great, but like I need a little more than coming along.

What are we talking about? This is a number one overall pick. Is he ready?

And he said he'll be ready again. Defense is ridiculous. That's what we've been talking about with the Bears. And Peter mentioned if you have not seen hard knocks Jalen Johnson. They're all Pro defensive back is just battling with Keenan Allen all practice every practice, one on ones, talking, chirping, and then after a few battles they sit Keenan Allen down in front of the media and they say, how's Jalen Johnson out there? And Keenan, to his credit, says, I haven't had a catch on him, Like, I can't get him. I'm going to get him one of these practices, but I can't get open on him. The Bears defense is very shortly now going to be the best kept secret.

This defense is going to blow up.

And you got a nice little piece there. Did you see that.

Your Hard Knocks there's a nice g NFB spot And I got jealous because it's your voice and it's wonderful when you're talking about the NFL top wonder And I was thinking, how can I get on Hard Knocks next week?

So here we go.

Give him something to think about.

Jamie, No sound hold on, give me give me a countdown, three to one, James, give it to me, Give it.

To me three two action.

The thing about the Bears that really concerns me is this coach's haircut gonna be Ryan Reynolds when it comes December and January, or are the things gonna come undone?

That's the question in Chicago this month.

And here you I heard my voice. I was like, Oh, Peter's gonna be big mad, all right.

We're gonna return on our show.

Congratulation.

My mind went a lot of places when this news came out yesterday for the Vikings offense and the fact that the tenth overall pick someone was so much potential, but they wanted to put him in the right spot and get all these things great, it's you're perfect for JJ McCarthy.

Where do the Vikings go after Sam Donald?

And how do they handle this in the future of their rookie quarterback.

Look, it's been a brutal last couple of months from Minnesota. They had a horrible tragedy with one of their players, They've got, you know, stuff off the field with other ones, and then they've got this injury, and it's like, we didn't want to start off the season this way. And yet I still say, I don't think this sets them back as long as JJ comes back in a couple months. Like I think it was Sam Donald's team anyway. And it's unfortunate for JJ McCarthy to hurt your meniscus in the preseason game, on a game that everyone was lauding and saying was unbelievable. Like I came on, you know, admittedly Monday morning, I'm like JJ McCarthy looked awesome, Like he looked great. So this is just terrible news for him personally. But twenty one years old, long career left, and Sam Donald was likely going to start anyway, So I can't say that the season is derailed because of it.

Yeah, you know, I'm right there with you, Peter. We already knew this was Sam Donald was going to be the starter. And you know, first off, I'm wishing JJ McCarthy a speedy recovery. I know that meniscus can be, you know, problematic, but I also know too that I believe he can heal quickly from that. But you know, this also gives him It takes the pressure off for coach O'Connell, It takes the pressure off the fans. I think there is this this this thing that happens when you get a guy who's a first round draft pick, you want to rush him in.

There's just rush, rush, rush.

I think this gives everybody just an opportunity to take a deep breath, let him recover, let him kind of get acclimated to the NFL game, taking the mental reps, and he'll be ready when his time is when his time is up.

That is a glass of half full way of looking at it. That it relieves the pressure. And I think there would have been pressure because I don't think Sam Donald is the answer, and if he wasn't going to start the opener, I feel like JJ would have been out there within the first few weeks of the season. Maybe not Now, it's just crazy. The guy starts forty games in college, goes out in the NFL field for ten seconds and he has this looks like a major knee injury. But look, the attitude around him is fantastic. JJ tweets love you Viking Nation, I'll be back in no time, and then he tweets a'mor fati, which is Latin Latin for loving fate like you are the hand that your dealt is the one that you roll with a very positive attitude. Every single piece of body we've ever gotten from him since we started watching him in college, so annoying bummer and call it whatever you want. I want him back as soon as possible because I think the Vikings need him.

We are thrilled now to have two members of the Colts Organization joining us for its as vice chair and owner, Kaylin Jackson, along with veteran Kenny Moore, the second joining us today friends of our show, have to talk all things Colts, both on the field and off the field. Good morning to you both, Good morning, good morning, awesome. So the Colts, as we know, have a wonderful initiative called Kicking the Stigma. You can see it's son Kenny's shirt there, which we're all excited to hear about. But let's cover Colts Camp first and then we're going to take it to Kicking the Stigma. I think you can both speak to this, Kailan first, as a family, as a Colts fan, and you know, knowing Indianapolis as well as you do. How thrilling was it to see Anthony Richardson back on the field, back in game action for the first time since his injury last weekend.

It was so exciting, and I think you know, when something like that happens, you count down the days and you know him more than anyone was waiting to get back out there. But he looks great, and I know everyone's excited to have him back in the locker room as well. I mean, he was a leader even when he was on the sideline, and so for him to be able to be back on the field is so exciting. I know the guys are pumped. I think, like many like Kenny, we're glad to have Kenny back, and so many guys back. It's a young team and I think there's just a lot to be excited about.

Kenny.

You've become one of the faces of the Colts. It's so great to have you here on the show today. And you had a really.

Cool interception last week of those tip drill types.

I know it's just the preseason, but it still has to get the blood going here. Can you take us through that play and how cool it was to get the defense going.

I mean, even if it doesn't count, it's still counts. The confidence, the momentum, the hype and joy on the saline.

You know, I'm a man and man coverage and.

I'll see the back he's looking out of the backfield trying to get the first down. He's bobbling the ball and I just did my best to secure it first, and obviously I'm trying to get up and go. So it was good to have that type of momentum for the team, and obviously we had a couple more.

Well, a question for both of you. You look at your phone right now in August, you turn on the TV and it's just Texans, Texans, Texans, Texans everywhere. Oh my goodness, so much Houston, Texas. Everybody loves the Texans. Interestingly enough, the schedule makers showed zero chick and has Colts Texans week one, Week one my friends at.

Home for you?

So how do you feel about this? It's a long time in division rival, but you've got CJ. Stroud, Anthony Richardson. Things are going in new directions for both teams. What's the state of the Colts Texans ravel right now? Because you're gonna see him a few weeks.

You want to take Againny, Sure, it's a football game and it's week one football games home.

Ready to go.

I don't really look at it, as you know, going back and forth. I just see that as a football game is just as important as week too, and audio other games, so so it's a week for me to prepare and get ready for and I'm feeling very opportunistic.

Well yeah, I mean thing for us it's it's it's week one, like you said. But I think it's exciting. I mean, it's an exciting time for the league, Like we give a young team, like I said, but it's fun to see these young quarterbacks, you know, making their way. And I know that you know, Ar and CJ have a good relationships. So I think it'll be a fun game. Obviously, we hope that we come out on top.

Yeah, and Kaitlyn, there's another game being played off the field. And you know, kicking the stigma is a crucial initiative. Now, how does it help raise awareness about mental health and work to eliminate the stigma that is so often, you know, surrounding mental health disorders.

Yeah, so we started this initiative in twenty twenty. Ironically, we had planned started before COVID hit, and then, as we all know, the issue became that more concerning for everyone and for us, it's something that's a personal issue for us. You know, we've lived experience with it with my dad and with myself. I've lived with anxiety, my whole life, and we talked very openly about it, and that was kind of the way we began, which is this shouldn't be something that is in the dark anymore. It should be out in the open. There should be something that is talked about, and we really put resources toward equitable access to resources, peer to peer resources, awareness and stigma obviously, but really exciting thing last two years is we've had a week at camp where we are focusing on it with our players, and we've chosen it to be the week that we've been in joint practices. So last year it was with the Bears, this year it's with the Cardinals, and it's just been a really wonderful thing to see those teams come alongside us and support this initiative with us because they see how important it is as well. So, as you said, Kenny's wearing our version of the shirt, and this is the version of the Cardinals shirt. They'll be wearing them the game and also the coaches will be wearing them in practice this week, and it's just a way to talk to show people that you're not alone, to show people that you can redefine masculinity in a lot of ways and that masculinely doesn't have to be not being open and being vulnerable a lot of things you're going through. So just really wonderful to be able to have the support of other teams to do this together. And yesterday we actually had Brian Dawkins come in and speak with the team. I led a conversation with him with the team and it was super impactful and powerful. His message is so strong, and his ability to be open about what his struggles were I think was really impactful for the team.

That's one of the most ferocious players on the field, so for him to come out and show that vulnerability is so important for the players to see. We had Solomon Thomas on our show last week speaking similarly about you know, you see me as this Greek god and this statue physically, but you don't know what I've been going through and it's okay to talk about it. Kenny, you're an active player in the league, one of the leaders of the league, and truly a leader in that.

Colts locker room.

How often are those conversations being had and what can we do at home to help, you know, I guess remove the stigma, but also you know, really lean into mental health is just health.

I think.

You know, being on a team full of players, you have certain guys that you'd like to talk to, and I think that's the same way how it is in life. You have certain family members, you have certain friends outside of the football that you like to, you know, go and talk.

To and be open with.

You know, teammates that you trust, Teammates that you've been to battle with, Teammates who have been in similar situations as you. You do your best to give certain advice or just a helping hand, just being a good listener. That's Those are the people that I like to talk to. So I have a couple in the locker room. Those talks I wouldn't say happened all the time, but I think whenever they do happen, it's.

Always perfect time.

Just knowing that those people are available to you, Kenny, though, is truly what's important.

You guys are doing awesome.

Stuff because people go to football because they love it, they need an escape.

But to know that they also.

Have a place where if you're sitting on the couch of somebody and you can have those conversations Kenny, like you do in the locker room. I think it's good for people to know that before we let you go, Kenny, you brought some joy to people this summer close to you. But also when you shared this video of you surprising your mom with a new favorites.

Oh what's your favorite? What was this like for you?

Good?

I honestly can't even describe, you know, just watching this video again, I haven't watched it in a little while, but just seeing the emotions that my mother had.

I'm very similar to my mother, so.

I really didn't know how she would respond in this manner. However, in the video, I thought she was going to run out of.

The front door.

Look, but just seeing her and talking to her now, you know, just asking about the house, it just seems like she's in paradise each day, and it's a dream come true.

For me.

It's always been a purpose of mom and a journey and a good situation to go out and work my hardest to be able to give my mom, you know, some happy days.

So schedule you.

Told me was doing it before he did it, and I was like, I can't wait to see the video. You what a special cool thing.

You pull off a surprise very well, because it seems like you made her get all the way into this house and then you told her it was hers right.

So in May. So so at the.

Beginning of this year, you know, my mother she was looking at houses and everything, and you know, I had to come up on free agency, so I had a lot on my plate. So I was like, mom, let me just focus on ball, focus on work. And so, you know, we get back to the colts and.

In May we ended up.

She ended up looking at this house and so on the listing it didn't have many pictures, and so I said, yeah, you can go.

And visit this house with a realtor. She did.

I went and play basketball Butler with some of the guys.

Don't tell Kayln.

And so she was bowing my phone up the realtor, and so I said, you know, let me get back with you. YadA, YadA, YadA. So I told the we can go ahead and do it. However, my sisters, I have sis sisters, they don't live in Valdosta. I wanted to make this this moment very special for my mother. I wanted to make this moment special for my family. And so every year I host the camp back at home and this weekend, the weekend that we had at. My entire family was there, my sisters were there, and so we just came up with a plan to surprise her.

I told her, you.

Know, the weekend at a camp, you know, we can start be looking at houses. And so she said okay, and so we went around town.

This this house.

Ended up, you know, being available, and everybody was inside and.

Was SURPRISERR Oh my gosh, Caitlen, you look so proud of Kenny to have them.

In your organization.

You guys should both be proud of what you're doing with kicking the stigma. Truly, two wonderful members of the Colts organization coming on our show.

We appreciate you guys so much. Kicking the stigma. Everybody
