CHICAGO (Aug. 19, 2026) — The Illinois Tollway board voted unanimously to approve Illinois’ largest passenger toll hike in history, despite 76% of online comments solicited by the Tollway opposing the increases. 
That’s about $225 in extra costs for a typical commuter, according to Illinois Policy Institute analysis.
The toll hike will take effect Jan. 1. Starting in 2029, tolls will automatically increase every two years based on inflation without another board vote.
