(7:05am) Lindsey Stroud from the Taxpayer Protection Alliance talks about President Trump pulling the U.S. out of the WHO.

Statement from Lindsey and the TPA:

In one of his first acts in office, newly inaugurated President Donald Trump has exercised his executive authority to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). This decision marks a significant shift in U.S. global health policy and reflects the administration's sharp criticism of the organization’s governance and operations.

In the executive order, President Trump cited several justifications for the withdrawal, including what he described as the WHO’s “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, its broader failures in managing global health crises, its resistance to adopting urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the undue political influence exerted by certain WHO member states.” Additionally, the order noted financial concerns, asserting that “the WHO continues to demand unfairly onerous payments from the United States, far out of proportion with other countries’ assessed contributions.”

Lindsey responded to the decision, stating:

“This is an excellent day for public health and science. The U.S.’s removal from the WHO will help to bring much-needed insight and oversight to an agency that has long benefited from American taxpayers without delivering proportional benefits to public health. The organization’s current structure and practices fail to meet the global health challenges of our time effectively.

“The U.S. contributes nearly 18 percent of the WHO’s overall budget and in return receives politically driven science and a bloated WHO bureaucracy.

“The WHO’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which included delays in declaring a global health emergency and inconsistent guidance, highlighted systemic issues within the organization. These failures have had a profound impact, particularly in low-to-middle-income countries, where the WHO’s influence is most deeply felt. Yet, the organization has consistently fallen short in addressing the underlying health priorities of these nations, focusing instead on initiatives that often align more with the agendas of influential donors than the needs of vulnerable populations.

“This move initiates a 12-month withdrawal process, during which there is an opportunity for the WHO to undertake meaningful reforms. The U.S.’s departure could serve as a catalyst for change, encouraging the organization to reevaluate its policies and operations. Furthermore, it sets a precedent that may inspire other countries to reassess their relationship with the WHO and demand greater accountability.”

“While the decision has drawn both praise and criticism, it underscores the administration's broader emphasis on prioritizing domestic interests and reevaluating multilateral commitments.”
